The San Francisco 49ers reported to training camp on Saturday, with the first practice set to begin on Sunday, July 26. There was some significant news surrounding the 49ers, and no, it was not about wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will miss the beginning of training camp after being injured in a car accident earlier this month.
While the news about Shanahan overshadowed everything else, 49ers general manager John Lynch did address Aiyuk. Specifically, Lynch was questioned about Aiyuk's status on the reserve/left squad list and his desire to play for the Washington Commanders.
But before Lynch got to the question about the Commanders, he opened his press conference by mentioning the Aiyuk situation.
"Brandon Aiyuk, I know you guys are going to have a lot of questions," Lynch said. "Brandon is on a left squad designation. As such, he's not on our 90-man roster. And I'm personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players that are here. And so, I don't have anything to say on that, anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well."
Then, Matt Barrows of The Athletic asked Lynch if Aiyuk would remain on the reserve/left squad list so that Aiyuk didn't end up on Washington's roster. The Commanders and 49ers play in Week 6.
"Matt, I understand you got to do your job. I understand. But as I said at the start, he's on that list. That means he's not on our roster. I'm going to focus on the guys that are and stand by what we've said already."
That's probably the last time you'll hear Lynch address the Aiyuk situation unless he reports to training camp and a move is made.
It's certainly interesting to hear Lynch directly asked about Aiyuk potentially playing for the Commanders. Aiyuk says he bought a home in Northern Virginia this week, near Washington's practice facility. And while the Commanders were reportedly interested in Aiyuk earlier this offseason if he was released by the 49ers, that may no longer be the case.
Two things are preventing Aiyuk from getting his release from San Francisco and going elsewhere: First, he must apply for reinstatement with the NFL. Secondly, he just needs to show up to force Lynch's hand. Until he does that, the 49ers are under no obligation to release him.
