Mr. Irrelevant has become Mr. Controversial.
Brock Purdy skyrocketed from the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to a star quarterback who led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship and the Super Bowl in his first two seasons. Last year he slipped to only 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as the Niners missed the playoffs.
Nonetheless, Purdy was recently rewarded with a five-year, $265 million contract that also - surprisingly - comes with a full no-trade clause for the duration of the deal usually reserved for such veteran stars as the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes.
Purdy, 25, now makes $53 million per season. Less than Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Dak Prescott's league-high $60 million, but more than Mahomes, two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and reigning Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Not bad for a 262nd draft pick that has made only one Pro Bowl. Too much, in fact, for critics who point to last season's career-worsts in completion percentage (65.9) and passer rating (96.1).
"The 49ers think this kid is the new Joe Montana … unreal," one fan tweeted. "Purdy gets financial security and control over his future in a deal that will be finalized and official soon."
Said another, "Bradley Beal 2.0."
"Damn he robbed the 49ers," a third fan posted.
"Keeps getting worse for 49ers fans, stuck with this bum lmaooooo," another critic posted.
To start earning his money and silencing his doubters, Purdy needs to lead the Niners from worst to first in the NFC West this season.
