The San Francisco 49ers have managed for the last couple of days to quell their seemingly dire injury situation early in training camp.
After Wednesday's practice when offensive lineman Nick Zakelj and defensive end Sam Okuayinonu left early, the 49ers were up to 20 players either out of practice with injuries or on the PUP list. There was some reason for optimism, but San Francisco couldn't afford more long-term injuries.
Zakelj remained out Thursday with an elbow injury, but Okuayinonu was back on the field and there was no news immediately following Thursday's practice about any injuries that occurred during the session. That doesn't mean there won't be additional news about ailments that arose the next time the 49ers suit up after Friday's off day. It's a good sign though that no players were noticeably banged up while the team was on the field.
Thursday actually saw the 49ers add more players returning from injury than they lost. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa and wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling were all back in action Thursday after missing time.
If nothing arises between the end of Thursday's practice and the start of Saturday's practice, and some injured players continue trending the right direction, we may be talking about the 49ers actually getting healthier just as they get their preseason slate started on Aug. 13 vs. the Tennessee Titans.
