The San Francisco 49ers were dealt an injury blow to their coaching staff after head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered major injuries in a car accident on July 14 according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
ESPN reported the extent of the ailments Shanahan suffered in the crash, noting he "broke his nose, three ribs, his hand, needed over 40 stiches in his face and suffered a severe concussion" in Northern California. He spent time in the hospital and was released the same date. Per ESPN the other driver involved in the crash was not injured, and neither drugs nor alcohol were involved.
Shanahan won't be able to participate at the start of training camp which is set to begin Sunday. 49ers veterans report to the facility Saturday. The 49ers' head coach is still dealing with concussion symptoms and will need to be cleared before returning to camp in a full capacity.
San Francisco will begin its preseason preparations in earnest without their head coach, but they will have a veteran coaching staff and a rash of veteran players who can put the team in a position to prepare without its coach. The team released a statement that indicated offensive line coach Chris Foerster will assume some of Shanahan's duties.
49ers general manager John Lynch is set to speak with reporters at 11am Saturday. The 49ers open their preseason schedule on August 13 against the Tennessee Titans at home. It's unclear whether Shanahan will be available to coach that game.
Shanahan is entering his 10th season in San Francisco. He's 82-67 in the regular season and 9-5 in the postseason with four trips to the NFC championship game and two Super Bowl appearances in his first nine seasons. His 10 seasons as head coach tie him with Bill Walsh for the most in franchise history.
