Kyle Shanahan has led the San Francisco 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances in the last five years. And, according to Pro Football Focus, both of those teams rank among the best to never win a championship.
PFF's Bradley Locker ranked the top-10 best NFL teams to not win a Super Bowl over the past 20 years, with the 2023 49ers coming in at No. 3 and the 2019 49ers at No. 10.
The 2023 squad earned a higher placement. San Francisco finished that season with a league-best 95.3 overall PFF grade and ranked no worse than third in either offensive or defensive grade. That eam also finished third in points scored and points allowed, and quarterback Brock Purdy finished fourth in MVP voting.
Nine starters posted a grade of at least 84.5, including Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner. The 49ers also own the 14th-best point differential in league history. Their overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58 kept perhaps Shanahan's best roster from taking home a Lombardi Trophy.
The 2019 team landed at No. 10 despite posting a league-best 93.9 overall PFF grade that season. San Francisco ranked no worse than sixth in EPA per play on either side of the ball and finished with the third-highest point differential in the league that year at plus-169, trailing only the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots. They also finished second in scoring and had the eighth-best scoring defense that featured Bosa alongside Richard Sherman, Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner and Jimmie Ward. The 49ers still fell to Kansas City in that Super Bowl in what was only Shanahan's third season as head coach.
Shanahan is 0-2 in Super Bowl appearances as San Francisco's head coach, with both losses coming against the Chiefs. Only one other coach appears twice on Locker's list: The New England Patriots. For Shanahan and the 49ers, the rankings serve as a reminder of how close the franchise has come — and how much has been left on the table.
