COLUMBIA — Four-star safety Davion Jones committed to South Carolina football on July 2, giving coach Shane Beamer a second highly touted player in 24 hours.
Jones, who is 5-foot-11, plays for Hough (NC) High School with Joshua Dobson, the five-star cornerback who committed to the Gamecocks on July 1. They both announced with a ceremony, one day apart.
Jones is the No. 6-ranked recruit from North Carolina for the Class of 2027 and is No. 6 nationally at his position, according to the 247Sports Composite. Nationally, he's ranked No. 144 overall.
Jones' final four schools were South Carolina, Auburn, Georgia and LSU.
Defensive backs coach Torrian Gray was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in December, right after his fifth season with Beamer in Columbia. Gray signed three defensive backs in last year's cycle out of high school and brought in three-star corner Quay'sheed Scott from Kentucky via the transfer portal.
When asked by 247 after his announcement why he picked South Carolina, Jones said the relationship with Gray, who he has known since he was in eighth grade.
Jones also added that he felt like he had connected with Beamer right away the first day they met, which he thought was "pretty neat."
Jones took an official visit on June 19 and said he told the coaches he was coming to South Carolina two days before he announced.
