4 Phillies lost the same popup in the sky in miserable moment vs. Nationals originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Philadelphia Phillies had one of the most inexplicable defensive plays you'll ever see on Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals.
A popup was hit to shallow centerfield, and the broadcast did us all the favor of capturing four Phillies on the same screen.
The second baseman, shortstop, third baseman and centerfielder were all hustling toward the landing point.
At the same time, though, they all sort of threw up their arms, as if to say, "Where is it?"
The ground soon learned the answer as the popup dropped in, and Daylen Lile was hustling and got to second base safely for Washington.
This is not how you want this play to look:

It's really confusing more than anything else. Players do lose the ball in the lights or the sky occasionally.
But how in the world did four different players from four different angles lose the flight of the ball? Did it disappear from the universe for a moment?
Thankfully for the Phillies, it didn't cost them this time. They won, 3-2.
But for a moment, it looked like this embarrassing moment could be crucial.
