Dec. 20—PEQUOT LAKES — It's been a heck of a start to the Bemidji High School boys wrestling team for Ozzie Hanks, Nick Strand, Gabe Morin and Nehemiah Schwinghammer.

Competing at the Jackhammer Invitational in Pequot Lakes, the aforementioned Lumberjacks were the lone representatives from BHS to place.

Schwinghammer claimed the top spot in the heavyweight bracket. In the round of 16, he pinned Perham's Jaden Gorentz in 1:47. He then beat Centennials' Brayden Boesch by fall (4:42) in the quarterfinals. Schwinghammer beat Eagan's Chris Garcia in a 5-3 decision in the semifinal round before handling Rogers' Sawyer Josewski in a 13-4 major decision.

Strand also took first place in his bracket at 145 pounds. He pinned his first three opponents — Pillager's Dalton Bentley, Champlin Park's Matthew Mayo and Centennial's Benjamin Johnson — in fewer than three minutes. Strand beat Foley's Wyatt Wall by fall in 5:32 before picking up an 11-2 major-decision win over Perham's Sam Roiko in the title match.

Gabe Morin won his first three matches at 139 pounds, including two by fall over Centennial's Ian Shelstad (1:55) and Champlin Park's Tatum Hachaba (1:36). In the semifinals, Morin fell to Totino-Grace's Jackson Refsnyder in a 10-1 decision, but rebounded to take home third place. Morin won over Braydon Kierstad in a 4-2 decision before nabbing a 1-0 decision win over Alexandria's Nolan Fettig.

Hanks secured a fourth-place finish at 114 pounds. He beat Eli Molitor of Foley by fall in 34 seconds before pinning Perham's Weston Sparbary in 3:31 in the quarterfinals. Mille Lacs' Vincent Schmid beat Hanks in the semifinals by major decision (10-0). Hanks won his consolation semifinal match over Rocori's William Strawser by decision (8-3) before falling to Cavan Fjed of Cloquet/Esko/Carlton by medical forfeit.
