Vaibhav Sooryavanshi overwhelmed by support after breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record on debut

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi says he has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love that followed his historic international debut on Saturday, when the 15-year-old became the youngest cricketer ever to wear an India cap, breaking a record that had stood in the name of Sachin Tendulkar for decades.

Sooryavanshi was just 15 years and 99 days old when he walked out to bat in the second T20I against England at Old Trafford, surpassing Tendulkar's long-standing record of debuting at 16 years and 205 days.

The occasion didn't slow him down, with the teenager showcasing his trademark fearlessness by smashing two sixes during his brief knock of 14 before being stumped.

Sooryavanshi says he is 'living a dream'

Sooryavanshi took to Instagram to share his feelings after the match, telling his followers he was grateful beyond words for the opportunity to represent his country.

“Overwhelmed by all the messages," Sooryavanshi posted on his Instagram stories. “Thank you to everyone of my well-wishers and seniors for your constant love and support. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to represent my country, and I’ll always try to give my best for my team every single time. Thank you for everything, everyone."

In an earlier post before the match, he had described the moment of receiving his maiden India cap simply as living a dream they had all seen together.

“Living a dream we all saw together. Thank you to everyone who continues to support me and stand by me through my ups and downs. Grateful," he wrote.

Sooryavanshi had earned his call-up after a stunning IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 776 runs to win the Orange Cap, becoming the youngest player to achieve that feat.

Despite growing public demand, India stuck with their established opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson through the Ireland series, which ended in a 0-2 defeat.

Samson's continued struggles with the bat, finally prompted the management to hand Sooryavanshi his long-awaited chance in Manchester.

The debut arrived but the result didn't go India's way, with England winning the second T20I by four wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. For Sooryavanshi, though, the record books will remember Saturday as the day a new chapter in Indian cricket officially began.
