Gavaskar warns India over delayed debut for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

India great Sunil Gavaskar has sounded a warning that the Indian team management may put unnecessary pressure on the teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with repeated deferment of his debut for the national side.

The young batter is part of the squad but has not made his senior India debut so far in the ongoing England T20I series The teenager had been picked for the Ireland series too, but he missed out there as well.

Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Gavaskar commented, "It (the delay) will put him (Sooryavanshi) under more pressure whenever he gets an opportunity. But at 15 years of age, you don't think too much about pressure.

"He knows that if he gets the opportunity in the second or third game, he will have to deliver almost immediately. That's there. But he is happy to be around. This Indian team is full of lovely, tremendous players, and it is just fantastic for him to be learning from them."

The debut records Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can break

If Vaibhav Sooryavanshi makes his debut in an Indian team match on 4 July 2026 at 15 years, 3 months, 7 days, he will easily break several records in Indian and international cricket of “youngest debutant.”

He will become the youngest player to play in an Indian team ever, breaking the record set by Sachin Tendulkar by almost a year, and will also set the benchmark for youngest debut in T20Is for full members worldwide.

What next for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

With four more T20I matches left in the series against England, the next on July 4, it is still likely that Sooryavanshi receives his first-ever Indian cap.

The selection of the teenager has already generated a lot of anticipation amongst the fans; however, every match he is left out of increases the pressure. If India continues to keep him out of the national side, the excitement about his debut will only grow.

Gavaskar's opinion lies less in rushing the 15-year-old to the international stage and more in the need for team management to be clear. Once the player is selected for the national team, and even more so in case there is hype around his selection, not playing him leads to more discussions than even his debut.
