While PSG made an initial offer to Parma in recent hours, the transfer of goalkeeper Zion Suzuki appears to be progressing well from Italy's perspective. Both Parma and Suzuki himself view the move favorably.
By making an offer of €28 million plus €5 million in bonuses to Parma for their Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, PSG made a resounding return to the goalkeeper market, a sector they know well since they have been active in it every summer for the past four consecutive seasons (Tenas, Safonov, Donnarumma, Marin, Chevalier, Longoni, among others).
While his coach, Carlos Cuesta, stated that “the only certainty today is that he is one of our players,” Zion Suzuki is clearly presented in Italy as on track to join PSG this summer. Juventus, long interested in the player to the point of having made an offer that was rejected, has turned its attention to another goalkeeper, and Parma is described as “wavering” in the face of the Parisian offer in Monday's edition of Gazzetta dello Sport. The newspaper even describes the transfer as “imminent,” without elaborating further.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano sheds light on the player's intentions, describing Zion Suzuki as increasingly open to joining Paris. Obviously, for a Parma goalkeeper, PSG is a huge opportunity, but the Japanese player wanted to know what the plan was before committing.
As he surely noted, PSG already has Matvey Safonov, Lucas Chevalier and Alessandro Longoni as goalkeepers, plus Renato Marin on loan. Before joining Paris, Suzuki would like assurances regarding his playing opportunities, or at least the possibility of competing with the other goalkeepers.
The proposed plan is not specified, but Paris seems to have two solutions in mind: Either Suzuki arrives as the backup goalkeeper and Chevalier leaves, or Suzuki is loaned out for the upcoming season before joining the squad next season if Chevalier ultimately stays, which was his initial wish. While the Parisian club is therefore convinced by the 23-year-old Japanese goalkeeper, his short-term future with the team does not depend solely on him.
It should be noted that Chevalier's name is also still being mentioned in connection with Juventus, for a possible loan, but Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham) is currently the Turin club's favorite.
It will be interesting to see how Suzuki fits into the squad and how he develops under Luis Enrique. More competition for Safonov.
