BALTIMORE – Just how big of a hit the Cincinnati Reds’ pitching depth took with Carson Spiers’ shoulder injury probably won’t be known until at least the next day or two.
For now, he’s headed back to Cincinnati for an MRI on Monday after revealing Saturday night to team officials that he’s been dealing with a “nagging” issue in the back of his pitching shoulder since before the season opened.
“He kind of fessed up that it had been bothering him since spring training,” manager Terry Francona said. ‘I told him, ‘One, I admire your guts, but, two, I want to wring your neck for not telling us.’
“He gutted up, and you appreciate that. But you also don’t want to hurt somebody. That really bothered me (Saturday) night.”

Spiers, who opened the season in the Reds’ rotation and made two starts before Andrew Abbott returned from the injured list, was recalled Friday when Nick Lodolo went on the paternity list.
Rather than make a start Sunday in Lodolo’s place as originally planned, he was pressed into duty to pitch the final four innings Saturday after Hunter Greene’s first short start of the year, fatiguing over the final four outs of that game.
The team planned to option him back to Triple-A Louisville as sixth-man depth for the rotation until talking through the “shoulder impingement” with trainers and team bosses.
Randy Wynne was recalled Sunday to join the bullpen for a day before Lodolo returns to the team Monday to start in Miami.
“It’s just been kind of a little nagging thing at the back of my shoulder,” Spiers said Sunday before heading to the airport. “It’s frustrating. But it’ll be good to get a sense of clarity on what it is and go from there.
“I don’t think it’s anything serious. However, they want to get some clarity of what it is. So I feel good about that. That’s what I want to do, too.”
Spiers described the injury as something that bothers him when he starts playing catch to warm up. “And once the adrenaline kicks in it kind of goes away,” he said. “As blood gets to the area, it kind of calms it down a little bit, but when it stops (after finishing pitching) it kind of jabs at me a little bit.
“So I just want to get it figured out."
