'Be aggressive': Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox unveil what Spurs need from Victor Wembanyama originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Stars shine in the NBA Playoffs but that is no accident. Typically, they want the ball more and aggressively position themselves to win against top contenders. The San Antonio Spurs did not see that from Victor Wembanyama in Game 6. Immediately after the 127-114 loss too, Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox, and the rest of the Spurs had one huge request from their superstar.
Spurs' Castle and Fox want Wembanyama to 'be aggressive' against Thunder
Despite having 15 field goal attempts, Victor Wembanyama had an insanely inefficient outing in Game 5. He only saw four field goals find the bottom of the net, none of his three-pointers went in, and 12 of his 20 total points came from the free throw line. Usually, stars in the NBA Playoffs have absurd amounts of shot attempts to keep their team afloat but this was just not the case for the Spurs.
Stephon Castle saw all of this go down and urged Wembanyama to go to the basket more so that they have a bigger chance of beating the Thunder, via Christian Clark of The Athletic.
"They sent so many bodies towards him. It’s hard sometimes. I think he just wants to make the right play. It’s tough. He’s our best player. We need him to be aggressive. I feel like him being aggressive opens up shots for other guys," Castle said.
Wembanyama already found this aggressiveness against the Thunder. It was the reason why he score 41 points to give the Spurs an unlikely Game 1 win despite going to double overtime. So, Castle knows that their star has that mentality inside him and it just needs to be unearthed.
De'Aaron Fox echoed the same sentiment. While the Spurs veteran acknowledged that Wembanyama got to the line, he knows that more aggressiveness will lead into more makes from the field.
"He got to the free-throw line. He just didn’t make shots. I think he was aggressive. I think his aggression was there. He just didn’t make shots," Fox said.
The Spurs are clearly banking their chances of escaping the Thunder and going deeper in the NBA Playoffs on Wembanyama. Will he be able to heed these requests from his teammates?
