The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the hunt for a tight end in this year's draft, though most media attention has been directed towards what Jacksonville needs on defense rather than offense.
While defensive tackle is arguably the Jaguars' most pressing need, tight end is still a priority, albeit a more under-the-radar one.
Yet what the Jags are looking for at tight end might be different from what some fans and analysts expect. In a recent press conference, Liam Coen insinuated that blocking ability — particularly at the second level — appears to be a key factor in how Jacksonville is evaluating tight end prospects, more so than receiving.
Thankfully for the Jaguars, there are plenty of good options at tight end in this year's draft class, including in later rounds. Here are a few options for the Jags to consider.
One of the highest-rated TEs in this year's class, Sadiq is admittedly expected to be taken in the first round. But crazier things have happened, and if he survives until the second ground, he would be a great fit for what Coen is looking for. Sadiq's explosive power and insane athleticism will make him a nightmare for linebackers and safeties.
The only downside is that, as a slightly smaller tight end, he may struggle against defensive ends, but he has enough talent, power, and potential to make up for that.
Boerkircher is a more likely prospect for the Jaguars, simply because he is expected to be taken in a later round. But that doesn't mean he wouldn't be an asset to the Jacksonville offense. He is known for his toughness, grit, and physicality — all things Coen loves. He's been called a "monster" in the trenches, and there's some real potential there for him to grow into a seriously impressive player.
Another likely late-rounder, Raridon didn't contribute much on the receiving front. But that's not what Coen is looking for, and what he is looking for, Raridon can provide. Raridon has proven to be a tough, tenacious blocker who has the athleticism to go against defenders vertically. He's got a lot of potential and could be lethal in Coen's scheme.
