The Indianapolis Colts have made another addition to their interior defensive line position group, signing former first-round pick Jerry Tillery.

Tillery is now the third addition to the defensive tackle position that the Colts have made, signing free agent Derrick Nnadi, along with acquiring Colby Wooden in a trade.

For more on the Colts' newest addition at defensive tackle, here are three observations from the Tillery signing.

3 stats to know about Jerry Tillery

Durable: Over the last three seasons, Tillery has appeared in all 51 regular-season games. Throughout his career, which began in 2019, Tillery has never played in fewer than 15 games in a season.

Playing time: Over the last four seasons, Tillery has filled more of a rotation role, averaging 452 snaps per year during that span.

Pass rushing snaps: The bulk of Tillery's NFL snaps have come rushing the quarterback. According to PFF, Tillery has 2,150 career pass rush snaps vs. 1,602 run defense snaps.

What will Jerry Tillery's role be with the Colts?

The addition of Tillery provides added competition to the defensive tackle rotation behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart. My guess is that Tillery will not be a lock to make the Colts final 53-man roster.

Perhaps the hope is that Tillery can provide an added pass rush presence, competing with Adetomiwa Adebawore and Colby Wooden, who won't be playing nose tackle with the Colts, for playing time.

Tillery can add some more versatility to the tackle position as well, able to play up and down the defensive front.

"I played nose (guard) last year. I played 3-technique throughout my whole career. I've played on the edge," Tillery said, via The Athletic's James Boyd. "It's all defensive line. And I think I can do whatever I can to help us win."

New #Colts DL Jerry Tillery says he feels comfortable playing all across the line.

"I played nose (guard) last year. I played 3-technique throughout my whole career. I've played on the edge. ... It's all defensive line. And I think I can do whatever I can to help us win."

Colts updated defensive tackle depth chart

  • DeForest Buckner
  • Grover Stewart
  • Colby Wooden
  • Adetomiwa Adebawore
  • Jerry Tillery
  • Derrick Nnadi
  • Tim Smith

It's important to note that while the Colts could be set at this position heading into training camp, none of these players are under contract in 2027. Major changes could be coming to the defensive tackle position next offseason.
