2027 ODI World Cup qualification: Rules and how teams can qualify?

A total of 14 teams, instead of 10 in the last two editions of the World Cup, will participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have automatically qualified for the 2027 ODI World Cup as co-hosts. Other than the two host nations, the top eight-ranked teams in the ICC men's ODI team rankings - excluding the host nations - in March 2027 will directly progress to the final competition.

So, if South Africa continues to remain among the top eight teams, then the ninth-placed team will progress directly.

The remaining four spots will be filled from the ODI World Cup Qualifier, taking place in summer 2027, where the next two teams in the ICC men's ODI rankings will go up against the top four from Cricket World Cup League Two and the top four teams from the Qualifier Play-Off.

The Cricket News Opinion: England at risk of missing out on direct qualificationThe

England cricket team's performance in the ODI format has been dismal since their early exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

They have won just eight matches in their last 27 outings since the last World Cup and are currently ranked eighth in the ICC men's ODI rankings.

If their performance do not improve drastically in the next 14 months, there is a good chance they will fall further in the rankings, below Bangladesh and West Indies and miss out on a direct qualification.

As per the latest ODI rankings, England's 89 rating is just five above ninth-placed Bangladesh.
