2026 NCAA Championships: SESSION 2 Recap
125 lbs: (1) Luke Lilledahl, Penn State vs (17) Jett Strickenberger, WVU
Round of Sixteen
(1) Luke Lilledahl W-DEC 4–2
You must be registered for see images attach
Don’t let that 17 seed fool you, Strickenberger’s a dangerous wrestler with some big wins under his belt including a blood round finish in last year’s tournament. He’s also known for cutting a lot of weight, spent the first half of last season at 133, so he benefits from those second sessions that are several hours after the morning weigh in. His goal he was to slow Luke down and he did just that. Posting his hand on Luke’s head kept some distance and stifled Luke’s offense. Luke got to a knee in the first but Strickenberger fought him off for a scoreless first period.
Strickenberger got on the board first with a quick escape in the 2nd and went back to more of the hand fighting. This time though, Luke got through to get the only takedown of the match. In the 3rd it was more of the same, Luke got the quick escape and then was hardly threatened holding off a couple of late attacks for the win.
This won’t go down as one of Luke’s memorable matches but he get’s the W to advance to the quarters.
133 lbs: (3) Marcus Blaze, Penn State vs (19) Gage Walker, MIZZ
Round of Sixteen
(3) Marcus Blaze W-TF 17–2 in 6:10
You must be registered for see images attach
Walker was overmatched from the start, backing to the edge off the whistle and drawing his first stall warning 46 seconds into the match. And then a second stall for the first point for Blaze. Blaze continued to stalk walker to the edge again, this time catching him and throwing him to his back for a 7-point move at the end of the period.
Blaze scrambled out and turned in for the reversal to open period 2, then a Walker escape. Blaze went to his short offense for another takedown in the second and then one more in the 3rd to secure the technical fall.
Blaze is damn near unbeatable on his defense only but when he get’s to his offense there’s hold on to your hat.
141 lbs: (14) Braeden Davis, Penn State vs (3) Brock Hardy, NEB
Round of Sixteen
(14) Braeden Davis L-DEC 4–9
You must be registered for see images attach
The rematch we’ve been waiting for, right? Davis came out at a measured pace this time. Until he didn’t. Things started well as Davis popped off his Russian tie to get behind Hardy for the initial takedown but Hardy kept fighting and scored a reversal of his own. Still things weren’t bad.
Hardy chose down and Davis strapped himself to Hardy’s back for 48 seconds. A damn strong, but after the escape Hardy turned it into his kind of match. Davis would attack and Hardy would scramble into a potentially dangerous call and then again. You could see Davis’ temperature rise and Coach Cody is up telling him to be cool but this is a Davis/Hardy match. Hardy’s going to win that style of match over Davis every time and BD get’s bounced to the consos.
149 lbs: (1) Shayne Van Ness, Penn State vs (16) Jacob Frost, ISU
Round of Sixteen
(1) Shayne Van Ness W-FALL in 2:23
You must be registered for see images attach
No messing around for Shayne this time and no early takedown given up to his opponent. SVN was all business, quickly getting to Frost’s leg, shelfing it, but Frost splits out of it. Take 2 and this time Shayne cracks him down for the score. After a quick escape by Frost, Shayne i s right back in on an ankle, a quick take down and a quick turn, not quite there. Shayne settles in and turns him again, this time we get the 4 count but Shayne keeps working and gets the fall. Relentless.
157 lbs: (1) PJ Duke, Penn State vs (17) Luke Mechler, WIS
Round of Sixteen
(1) PJ Duke W-FALL in 1:38
You must be registered for see images attach
We’ve awoken the monster. Maybe it was confidence gained in manhandling Trelly in the B1G Final or maybe it’s just all falling into place. Whatever it is Mechler was dead meat and PJ bludgeoned him with brute force takedowns. Six of them before grinding Mechler’s shoulders into the mat for the win by fall.
165 lbs: (1) Mitchell Mesenbrink, Penn State vs (16) Paddy Gallagher, OHST
Round of Sixteen
(1) Mitchell Mesenbrink W-MD 12–0
You must be registered for see images attach
Poor Paddy Gallagher. The kid looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but on the mat with Mitchell. The first stall came just 30 seconds into the match as Paddy backed off the edge. On the restart Mitch dove in on Paddy’s legs and scored a quick takedown. Then another stall call and another point for Mitchell. Mitch continues to work for turns but Gallagher’s bellied out and going nowhere.
There’s been some criticism that Mitch is spending too much time on top, looking for turns, when he could be cutting and going for more takedowns and tech falls but Mitchell continues to work on his craft and it can be a challenge when a guy like Gallagher is bellied out like that. As it was, one more stall call and Gallagher would have been DQ’d but our ref held his whistle and all we get is a major decision.
174 lbs: (1) Levi Haines, Penn State vs (16) Nick Fine, COL
Round of Sixteen
(1) Levi Haines W-TF 21–6 in 5:26
You must be registered for see images attach
Haines can be very methodical. Patiently working through the head and hands defense to get to legs and Fine could only hold him off for so long. Levi looked to the figure four to control Fine’s legs, tried to string up the bow and arrow in the first period but Fine squirmed out of it.
Fine offered little resistance and Levi continued to rack up the takedowns for the technical fall in the 3rd.
184 lbs: (1) Rocco Welsh, Penn State vs (16) Rylan Rogers, LEH
Round of Sixteen
(1) Rocco Welsh W-MD 13–4
You must be registered for see images attach
You like offense? Of course you do. I think Rocco likes it too. Rocco shot off the whistle to score the first of his four takedowns and this one was never in doubt. Keep ‘em coming Rocco.
197 lbs: (1) Josh Barr, Penn State vs (17) Dillon Bechtold, BUCK
Round of Sixteen
(1) Josh Barr W-MD 11–3
You must be registered for see images attach
Barr looked to work the underhook early, then hit a head inside single for a 3-0 lead. Cut him loose and then switches from a double to a single to secure the 2nd takedown. Barr rode out the 1st period with 6-1 lead.
Barr got the only point of the second with an escape. He got in on a shot but Bechtold grabbed his ankle and held on for the stalemate
One more takedown for Barr in the 3rd and a riding time point scored the major decision.
285 lbs: (9) Cole Mirasola, Penn State vs (8) Ben Kueter, IOWA
Round of Sixteen
(9) Cole Mirasola L-DEC 0–4
You must be registered for see images attach
The Cole Mirasola project continues. Cole repeatedly fires shots, Kueter repeatedly sprawls and grabs ankles. In the third, down a point, Cole takes that last shot as running out. Kueter sprawls again and Cole ends up out of position in a desparate attempt to finish and Kueter counters for the score. And so it goes.
Cole’s going to start winning these matches, he’s going to clean up those shots and he’s going to score points. He’ll get there. But for now, he’s on to the consolation bracket.

Pulling ahead by 13.5 points after session 2 is setting the stage for another big win in the team race. The Quarter Finals, Session III, is where we will see serious separation from the field. Each win in the topside earns you 1 advance point and 6 placement points as you’re assured to finish no worse than 6th.
Last year’s Session 2 lead was 11.5 points over Nebraska compared to the current 13.5 point lead, also over Nebraska. All 8 PSU wrestlers are the favorite to advance in this next round.
