Yesterday had some fun (and a lot of goals). Japan opened things up with a 4-0 drubbing of Tunisia, breaking the Japanese record for most goals scored in a World Cup game. Spain opened their World Cup with a shocking 0-0 draw against Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia were able to get a surprising 1-1 draw with Uruguay in their opener. The universe returned to balance as Spain (with Lamine Yamal) thrashed Saudi Arabia 4-0, scoring three in the first 24 minutes. Belgium only managed a 1-1 draw with Egypt in their opener, and they couldn’t do any better against Iran yesterday, settling for a scoreless draw despite 70% possession, 23 shots, and 1.79 xG. Belgium was not helped by having to play a man down after Nathan Ngoy’s red card in the 66th minute. Uruguay and Cape Verde played a thrilling back-and-forth match that ended 2-2. In the late game, New Zealand opened the scoring against Egypt in the 15th minute, and it stayed 1-0 until the 58th, when Egypt mounted an overwhelming comeback and finished with a 3-1 win.
The stars will be out again today as we see Group I and Group J.
