The 2026 Winter Olympics are in full swing, with the fourth full day of action taking place on Tuesday, February 10. While the Milan Cortina Games have been providing some high-quality entertainment, there has been one issue that has everyone scratching their heads.
Throughout the first few days of competition, several medalists have shared videos of their broken medals immediately after receiving them. Other moments have been captured on video during athlete celebrations.
The issue appears to be with the way medals are attached to the ribbon, with the medal breaking loose.

Among the athletes to share their gold medal mishaps was United States figure skater Alysa Liu, who won gold with Team USA during the team final on Sunday.

Liu joked about the medal mishap on social media. “My medal don’t need the ribbon,” Liu captioned a video showing off the detached medal while smiling.

A compilation video of several athletes going through the same issue has gone viral on social media.
Hopefully, Olympic officials can figure out a solution and replace the medals that were damaged.
In a statement responding to the malfunctioning medals, Andrea Francisi, the chief games operations officer for the Milan Cortina organizing committee, said officials are “working on” a solution while speaking to the Associated Press.

“We are aware of the situation, we have seen the images,” Francisi said. “Obviously, we are trying to understand in detail if there is a problem.
“But obviously we are paying maximum attention to this matter, as the medal is the dream of the athletes, so we want that obviously in the moment they are given it that everything is absolutely perfect, because we really consider it to be the most important moment. So we are working on it.”

Some athletes, like USA downhill alpine skier Breezy Johnson, have already said they have received new medals after theirs broke.
“I don’t know if I have very many Olympic records,” Johnson joked after showing off her medal. “But I might have the shortest-lived Olympic medal record.”
