Former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman made a unique comparison for Norway's Erling Haaland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The three-time Super Bowl champion called Haaland Europe's Gen Z version of legendary tight end Rob Gronkowski.
"First thing I saw when I saw [Haaland], I play FIFA a lot, so I know a little bit about these guys," Edelman said, via Yahoo Sports Daily. "...Yeah, that dude's full European Gronk. It's unreal. He's European Gen Z Gronk. I love him getting on Snapchat after the games and answering fans, doing goofy stuff and putting cowboy boots on."
Haaland is a massive enough human being to pass the eye test on the size comparison. However, he also brings a loose and fun-loving personality reminiscent of the former Patriots star.
Haaland was a force for Norway during their impressive World Cup run, scoring seven goals in the tournament overall. It was a continuation of his production during the World Cup qualifiers, as he had 21 goals and two assists across eight matches.
He plays with a rare physicality that proves his size isn't just for show.
It's a high compliment being paid to Haaland to be compared to arguably the greatest tight end in NFL history. And just like Gronkowski, Haaland is equally beloved across the sports spectrum. Here's hoping a formal meeting is in the future for the two athletes, if it hasn't already happened.
