It's not really an analysis, it's just a list based on statistics, so I don't think there's anything "fair" or "unfair" about it - it simply illustrates which defenses have been the best and worst over the last 5 years.

The difference between Washington and Houston is 30 TDs, not 15. That seems far from insignificant.

The difference between Arizona and Pittsburgh is 50 TDs. 10 TDs per year is definitely significant.
You’re right. It’s a data visualization.

But I’m befuddled by what the creator thinks we should take away from it.

The Cards conceded 40-50-51-38-50 TDs in the past five seasons.

The panthers just below them conceded 42-42-44-59-40 in the same period.

The article is partially right, in that the schedule sets up for the team to have an awful record all the way through the bye week, opening up an opportunity for Beck to start four games vs. a much easier slate after the bye. That could be the worst possible scenario, as (a) it could make Beck look better than he is vs. the QBs who start before the bye, (b) four games is still not enough to evaluate him properly as a potential QBOF (unless he stinks it up!), and (c) it could result in some late wins that would hurt the Cards' draft position and ability to draft the best QBOF, and give false optimism for a team "turning the corner" with Beck. Oof.

The article is incorrect in stating that the bye week would allow "an extra week of practice in the event of a quarterback switch". That's not how bye weeks work. But it would give the coaching staff an extra week to plan for a QB switch, and bye weeks are often used for such purposes.

It reflects the culture, lack of second contracts for draft picks. Like I ain't getting hurt here, and then they bolt.

“It’s a whole different feeling going into this year versus last year,” Johnson said. “Last year, coming in with all the draft stuff and combine, and I was injured coming in, so that versus having some experience and feeling comfortable in the defense is a whole different feeling. It feels really good this year.”
