The summer season has officially arrived on Maryland's Eastern Shore, as the calendar turned to June, and the weather continues to warm up. And for local fishing enthusiasts, that means more fishing tournaments are set to take place in the coming months, including the biggest of them all, the White Marlin Open.
The annual White Marlin Open is set to hold its 52nd year of competition this summer, as the tournament is just two months away. Beginning on Monday, Aug. 4, and lasting until Friday of that week, boats and anglers from all around will travel to Ocean City in hopes of reeling in big catches, and the prize money that comes along with them. According to the tournament's website, more than 100 boats have already registered for this year's tournament.
Last year's tournament saw 318 boats competing in the 2024 edition of the White Marlin Open, with about $8.5 million dollars in prize money on the line. Last year's tournament was also extended by a day due to weather conditions, which meant even more fishing and big catches than usual for fans and onlookers at the Harbour Island Marina scales. And every year at the White Marlin Open, there are fans on the lookout for celebrity anglers like Michael Jordan, who has been known to bring his Catch 23 boat to compete in the tournament.

The fishing categories that anglers will be competing in include White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Tuna, Swordfish, Dolphin and Wahoo. In 2024, angler Ven Poole and the Waste Knot boat out of Raleigh, North Carolina, won the biggest prize of the tournament, with their 77.5-pound white marlin catch yielding them a $3.6 million dollar cash prize. As we get closer to this year's tournament, anticipation will build to see who will bring in the biggest catches in the 2025 edition of the White Marlin Open.
