All-County Football: Defense

The Claremore Daily Progress All-County Football team was selected from nine county programs — Claremore, Catoosa, Oologah, Inola, Verdigris, Sequoyah, Chelsea, Foyil and Claremore Christian — based on coach nominations and statistics.

Players were evaluated by position-specific production and overall impact, with defensive selections prioritizing tackles for loss, sacks, turnovers and defensive touchdowns.

Here is an in-depth look at the first-team defense:

AWARD WINNERS

Large School Defensive MVP: Huston Wilhite | Inola | Senior Defensive Back

Wilhite recorded 6 interceptions, returning 3 for touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the county’s most dangerous ball-hawking defensive backs. He added 22 total tackles from the secondary while providing reliable coverage support across the field and breaking up 4 additional passes, combining with his interceptions for 10 total passes impacted on the season.

Small School Defensive MVP: Sawyer McComb | Claremore Christian | Senior Linebacker

McComb produced 60 total tackles, including 34 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, dominating opposing backfields as Claremore Christian’s primary defensive disruptor. He forced 4 fumbles and recovered 1, consistently creating turnover opportunities through pressure and penetration while also leading the Warriors’ front with elite backfield production, finishing among the county leaders in both tackles for loss and sacks.

FIRST TEAM

Demetrius Cummings | Claremore | Sophomore Defensive Lineman

Cummings recorded 34 tackles, including 18 tackles for loss and 4 sacks, emerging as Claremore’s most disruptive young front defender while consistently penetrating backfields.

Owen Ellis | Inola | Junior Defensive Lineman

Ellis registered 45 tackles and 8 sacks with 2 forced fumbles and 1 recovery for Inola, establishing himself as one of the Longhorns’ top edge rushers and a constant backfield threat opposing offenses often schemed away from.

Troy Frank | Claremore Christian | Senior Defensive Lineman

Frank totaled 27 tackles but dominated backfields with 15 tackles for loss and 7 sacks, also recovering 3 fumbles including 1 returned for touchdown for Claremore Christian’s defense throughout the season.

Caleb Helling | Inola | Senior Defensive Lineman

Helling recorded 36 tackles with 8 tackles for loss and 3 sacks for Inola, also intercepting 2 passes returned for touchdowns while forcing 3 fumbles and recovering 2 during a turnover-filled defensive season.

Landon King | Claremore | Senior Defensive Lineman

King posted 48 tackles with 16 tackles for loss and 6 sacks for Claremore, leading the Zebras’ front in consistent backfield disruption and providing strong pressure against both rushing and passing attacks all season.

Will Rogers | Verdigris | Senior Defensive Lineman

Rogers recorded 75 tackles with 10 tackles for loss and 4 sacks for Verdigris, serving as the Cardinals’ primary edge defender and producing steady backfield pressure and run support throughout the defensive season.

Brennan Lawley | Inola | Senior Linebacker

Lawley totaled 71 tackles with 7 tackles for loss for Inola, also intercepting 3 passes and breaking up 5 others while adding 1 fumble recovery during a versatile, coverage-heavy defensive season for the Longhorns.

Blake McCuan | Claremore | Senior Linebacker

McCuan recorded 67 tackles with 13 tackles for loss and 1 fumble recovery for Claremore, also blocking and returning a punt for touchdown in the playoffs during a productive and impactful defensive season.

Virgil Pendergraft | Foyil | Sophomore Linebacker

Pendergraft amassed 110 tackles with 14 tackles for loss and 6 sacks for Foyil, also recovering 2 fumbles while serving as the Panthers’ leading defensive presence.

Tanner Reed | Chelsea | Senior Linebacker

Reed recorded 77 tackles with 14 tackles for loss for Chelsea, adding 1 interception, 5 forced fumbles and 2 recoveries while also blocking 5 extra points during an all-phase defensive season.

Kolbey Sanders | Foyil | Sophomore Linebacker

Sanders produced 86 tackles with 12 tackles for loss and 6 sacks for Foyil, also intercepting 2 passes and recovering 4 fumbles while serving as a turnover-creating backfield disruptor throughout the Panthers’ defensive campaign.

Daniel Snipes | Claremore Christian | Senior Linebacker

Snipes recorded 74 tackles with 38 tackles for loss and 4 sacks for Claremore Christian, leading the Warriors’ defense in backfield disruption and consistently producing negative plays against opposing rushing attacks.

Orasio Flores | Foyil | Senior Defensive Back

Flores totaled 65 tackles with 6 tackles for loss and 2 sacks for Foyil, also intercepting 3 passes while providing aggressive run support and coverage production in the Panthers’ secondary.

Ayden Gaines | Oologah | Senior Defensive Back

Gaines recorded 25 tackles with 3 interceptions, returning 1 for touchdown, and 2 fumble recoveries and another score for Oologah, producing multiple turnovers and impact plays from the Mustangs’ secondary during the season.

Devin Johnson | Catoosa | Junior Defensive Back

Johnson recorded 101 tackles with 6 tackles for loss and 1 sack for Catoosa, adding 2 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery while serving as the Indians’ leading tackler from the secondary.

Jayce Kent | Inola | Freshman Defensive Back

Kent recorded 38 tackles with 3 interceptions, including 1 returned for touchdown, and 1 fumble recovery for Inola, adding 4 pass breakups during a highly productive first varsity defensive season.

Hayden Lee | Claremore | Senior Defensive Back

Lee recorded 62 tackles with 3 tackles for loss and 1 sack for Claremore, intercepting 5 passes and recovering 1 fumble while leading the Zebras’ secondary in turnovers and coverage production. Also had a punt return touchdown.

Mason Weeks | Sequoyah | Junior Defensive Back

Weeks recorded 32 tackles and intercepted 6 passes for Sequoyah, also recovering 2 fumbles while leading the Eagles’ secondary in takeaways and providing consistent coverage production throughout the defensive season.
