2024 Season Review

Carlies was a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft by the Colts. During his college career, he played safety, but Indianapolis converted him to linebacker.

As a rookie, Carlies was the third linebacker on the depth chart, seeing playing time alongside of Zaire Franklin and EJ Speed when the Colts were lined up in their base 4-3 look. He also made a few starts as a nickel linebacker when Speed had to miss time due to injury.

A fibula injury and IR stint limited Carlies to 10 games, but when on the field, he proved to be a reliable tackler and was able to limit pass catchers in coverage, allowing just 6.0 yards per reception, per PFF.

On special teams, he regularly contributed to the kick return and kick coverage units.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season

Although Carlies is still a relatively inexperienced player with only 242 defensive snaps under his belt, he is the presumed starter this season next to Franklin, with the Colts very bullish on the second-year linebacker, with GM Chris Ballard mentioning earlier this offseason that Carlies is a player who can "really ascend."

Carlies seems to be a really good fit for Lou Anarumo's defensive scheme with the coverage abilities he brings to the linebacker position. Under Anarumo, there will be an emphasis on having coverage defenders on the field, especially on third downs in what Anarumo called a "matchup league."

In addition to that, the Colts needed more of that to pair with Franklin, which can then free him up to navigate closer to the line of scrimmage more often, which is where he is at his best.

Once training camp rolls around, however, Carlies will be playing some catch-up. He has missed offseason programs while recovering from shoulder surgery. It's one thing to know the new playbook on paper; it's another thing to implement it on the field.
