From what I've read they will have to fund about $46 million of his contract each year for the next 10 years and that that amount will count toward the luxury tax. They will also be paying about $80 million in deferred money every year over an 11-year period to Ohtani, Freeman and Betts, so that will certainly affect their ability to spend later on.

And let's not forget how the Diamondbacks used deferred payments to build their 2001 championship team. We don't exactly come into this with clean hands.

Without the ability to defer hundreds of millions of dollars the valley doesn’t have their lone championship.
18 players agreed to defer $250 million to make that possible.

Teams have been doing this for years. In the NBA they had to take steps in 1982 to define how much teams could defer (30%) after the Kings fell behind on payments (to Oscar Robertson, Lucius Allen and Brian Taylor), the Nuggets fell behind on payments (to David Thompson and Charlie Scott) and the Clippers' owner Donald Sterling fell behind on deferred playments to several former players (mostly from a complicated Braves/Clippers franchise swap with the Celtics in 1978 - Jo Jo White, Don Nelson, Sidney Wicks, John Havlicek, Paul Silas, Tom Boswell, Charlie Scott, etc. along with some former Braves/Clippers like World Free, Gar Heard and Bill Walton).

He's this generation's Bobby Bonilla. It's crazy that Bobby will still be getting paid when Ohtani's deferred payments start.

From 2013.

As a result of his contract buyout, the Islanders will continue to pay DiPietro $1.5 million annually until the end of the 2028–29 season. DiPietro and former New York Mets player Bobby Bonilla collect a contract buyout payment on the same day annually
