Looking at the statistics for 2012 and the 2013 (to date) Cardinal Defenses:
Regular Season Statistics:

Total Defense: 12th in 2012 (337 y/g); 15th in 2013 (343 y/g).

Rush Defense: 28th in 2012 (137 y/g); 5th in 2013 (79 y/g).

Pass Defense: 5th in 2012 (202 y/g); 19th in 2013 (264 y/g).

"So how is the Brown's Defense doing" with Ray Horton? So glad you asked:

Total Defense: 23rd in 2012 (364 y/g); 5th in 2013 (302 y/g).

Rush Defense: 18th in 2012 (119 y/g); 8th in 2013 (94 y/g).

Pass Defense: 25th in 2012 (245 y/g); 7th in 2013 (207 y/g).

Looks like Ray is showing he was no fluke; in fairness, Todd Bowles season is only 30 percent done and he just got one of his best defensive players back while our CB's and LB's have been injury ridden.

Thoughts?

Interesting stats. I am betting it'll be a wash this season. The two teams will end up ranked close to each other when it is all said and done.

How do we account for defenses that are tired because their offense is bad?

I think the D has played very well this year, but the next four games, all against legit offenses will tell the true tale of the tape.

im not sure if this sunday is a very legit offense. Or next thursday honestly. Or the atlanta or houston games at that.

NO was the most legit offense we face this year. Maybe the colts game too.

yeah...legit was probably too strong a word. But, while the Niners have been pretty up and down, they have put 27, 34 and 35 points in three of five games. same with Houston, having been able to put up 30, 31 and 20 so far. And even though the Falcons just lost Julio, it's still an offense that has put up 31, 23, 23 and 28 in it's last 4 games.

And the Seahawks have put up 45, 29, 23 and 20.

Anywho, none of those offenses are juggernauts, but they're all offenses that should present more problems then Carolina's dysfunctional unit and Tampa's woeful unit, which is where we've made a lot of headway in the defensive rankings.

Looks like things are playing out like most of us expected. A weaker pass defense and stronger run defense. Now whether or not that is what you want in today's NFL where you have a single game where the two QB's combined for 920 yards and 9 TDs passing. But only 2 RBs out of 32 teams gained over 100 yards.

Thankfully we don't play Denver this season.

Where's the most important Defensive stat of all...Points per game?

Don't forget when looking at that # to take into account pick sixes, PR and KR TDs, fumble returns etc. For instance our offense in 2010 was actually almost 5 points per game worse than the 18.1 that shows on the team rankings because our D and special teams scored 11 TDs.

OK. I replaced "Total Defense" with Average Points Allowed per Game (APAG). You can always add rush and pass allowed yards to get the total.

APAG: 17th in 2012 with 22.3; 10th in 2013 with 19.

Rush Defense: 28th in 2012 (137 y/g); 5th in 2013 (79 y/g).

Pass Defense: 5th in 2012 (202 y/g); 19th in 2013 (264 y/g).

Browns (with Horton in 2013):

APAG: 19th in 2012 with 23; 9th in 2013 with 18.8

Rush Defense: 18th in 2012 (119 y/g); 8th in 2013 (94 y/g).

Pass Defense: 25th in 2012 (245 y/g); 7th in 2013 (207 y/g).

Your right; a significant difference on the yards we allowed versus the points that came out of it reflects us taking the ball away at critical times; ie. when they are near or in our red-zone.

Also makes me wonder if the Browns have been working with short fields or a lot of turn-overs from their Offense; they are allowing more points than the total yards they give up would indicate.

Horton's 'd' seems to emphasize pass 'd' and third down efficiency. Bowles first and foremost wants to stop the run and everything else flows from there. Different approaches but similar results to this point.

I think you have to compare Ray's first season 2011 vs Bowles first season.

apples to oranges, IMO. Ray took over what was a terrible defensive unit and had no off-season, as opposed to Bowles, who took over a very good defense with a full off-season to implement his scheme.

Horton took over talented defensive personnel that had performed poorly as a unit.

How about Oranges to Tangerines? Horton took over a unit with talent that wasn't be utilized properly but as you stated had no offseason to implement the scheme. Bowels took over a very good unit that "had to" make changes to some of the talent to fix the CAP and many argued the talent level was reduced.

Horton did a fantastic job here and looks to be replicating that success with the Browns.

So far Bowles is doing a very good job and hopefully he can sustain and build on that success.

Ya, pretty good take on it.

Very impressed with Bowles work this season. He played it close to the vest, and did not let us see a lot of blitzes in the preseason. But he has dialed up the blitz recently. I saw delay blitzes, CB blitzes and even the infamous Ray Horten double zero blitz on Sunday against Carolina.

I think the talent was always there, but I am seeing better technique at NT (Williams and Ta'amu have been solid, if not unmovable). Also the coverage has been really tight particularly in man-to-man from the DBs.

I will always miss Ray Horten, glad to see him succeed in Cleveland. He will get his own team in the next couple of years and he is one coach I would not bet against. I understand that Bruce Arians is the leader of this ship and Horten was just a little to vocal to be in the same room as him.

This one says it all to me. That's not to take anything away from Horton, his performance in AZ and so far in CLE speak for themselves. But I was one that HATED to see Horton go especially considering Bowles' track record in Philly. Color me wrong, I've been very impressed with this D so far this year and put in on par with what we had last year. Considering this D scheme is so new, it's even more impressive that they're performing this well so soon. Remember the 1st half of 2011 when Horton first implemented his scheme, we were all calling for his head.

First 5 games under Horton in 2011 24.2 pts per game, 118 rush yds and 273 pass yds.

First 5 under Bowles 19 pts, 79 rush and 264 pass.
