GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) — For the first time in a while, Packers running back Marshawn Lloyd is getting the chance to learn from his mistakes on the football field vs. watching from the sideline.
The third-year back out of USC has dealt with a bevy of injuries in his two seasons with Green Bay, but right now he says he’s as healthy as ever and ready to attack this year.
Local 5 Sports caught up with MarShawn after Sunday’s training camp to discuss his start to practice ahead of the NFL season.

FOWLER: Here with Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd. And MarShawn, I asked Evan Williams this question last week. Who’s the funniest guy in the locker room in your opinion?
LLOYD: It’s probably three of them. Probably Kamal Hadden. I’ll give it to CV [Carrington Valentine], and I’ll say Keisean Nixon next. Those are the three funniest guys on the team, for sure.
FOWLER: What makes them so funny?
LLOYD: CV, he’s just — I mean, as everyone knows, he’s just different. He’s just a different guy. And then the other two, they just crack jokes. Really fun, fun to be around. Good energy all the time. So I feel like that’s the biggest thing for them too.
FOWLER: And then recapping your family experience, how was that for you? You said your family was in town for it.
LLOYD: Yes, it was fun. It was fun being able to see my mother. My mother was down. My stepfather, my nephew came, my grandmother, my aunt. All good to see them. A couple of my close friends that I grew up with, they came as well. So it was good to see everybody there just being there, like, all together and then experiencing the Family Night thing for the first time with all of them.
FOWLER: So I asked Chris McClellan if Family Night is sort of a simulation of game day. He said it never really actually matches the intensity of Sundays. Do you kind of feel the same way, like good to kind of go out there and be in the stadium for the first time, but not really like Sundays, right?
LLOYD: Definitely not. As far as from what I see, like from the side when I was coming from an injury last year, just being out there, it was nice. You know, first of all, the stadium is different than any other team. But when you’re playing on Sunday, it’s a different level of energy.
You know, the fans are just a different level of excitement. And it’s fun. It’s exciting.
FOWLER: MarShawn, for you, this is probably the healthiest you’ve been in terms of the length at which you’ve been healthy. How different has it been kind of being with this team now that you’re actually playing versus watching and observing? Like now you’re actually on the field? How different has the experience been for you?
LLOYD: It’s been good because now I’m messing up, you know, which is something you don’t really want all the time. But it comes with the experience and it’s good to mess up. It’s good to figure out, go home, and figure out what I need to do to get better. It’s fun.
You know, it’s a lot of things that I still have to learn and things I still have to catch up on too, because, you know, it’s been a minute. It’s been a while since I’ve actually been on the field with teammates. So it’s good to really just be out there and just have fun.
FOWLER: Do you feel like Coach Ben Sirmons and the rest of the running back room, Jordan, and the backup quarterbacks are really helping you get along and help you make good on those mistakes?
LLOYD: 100%, 100%, 100%. They helped me a lot. You know, with things that I know I need help on or if I’m lacking something, they always help me in every aspect. Coaches all the time. But the running backs as well.
FOWLER: And I know we kind of joked about it over here last week. Where did the nickname Yeet Cannon come from? Did it just spawn out of nowhere or where did that come from?
LLOYD: I think it was Coach Matt. We were doing, like, a special teams DRILL during OTAs, and I ran and I just took off and he put it on the — it was a good rep. He put it on the tent in the team room. He was like, look at this.
He’s a Yeet Cannon. And then it kind of just — then a lot of teammates started calling me, and then they just keep saying it. It kind of — then somehow it got out of the building from Jordan. So now every time I post anything or somebody come in, “Hey, Cannon,” which is cool too.
I like stuff like that. It’s pretty cool to even be recognized in any way, you know. So it was cool.
FOWLER: MarShawn, what do you feel like you need to focus on in order for you to have a big year?
LLOYD: Really just, I mean, I think I can do a lot with the ball in my hands. Really just put my head down and work, you know, being a physical guy. You know, I feel like that’s the thing that I can work on.
You know, like I said, I haven’t played football in a minute, so I just got to get that physicality back. I got to be able to run the ball. You know, when people are attacking me, make them feel me as much as they can.
So I just got to keep working on that and just go from there. Really, I feel like everything — catching the ball, there’s a lot of things I work on. I can catch the ball better. My tracks in the backfield can be better. Pass protection can be better. All around, you know, it’s a work every day.
FOWLER: MarShawn, do you ever manifest the moment, like running out of Lambeau Field to begin the season? Like, what is it, Week 3 or Week 2 against the Falcons? Like, do you ever think about that moment?
LLOYD: I do. I definitely do. It’s — I haven’t really did it for a real game. So the emotions will be there. But, you know, once it gets past that first snap, I’ll be good.
