The Kansas City Royals had high expectations for the 2026 MLB season. However, their performance has been nothing short of underwhelming so far. So, what is going wrong for the Royals?
In all reality, there are a number of reasons. The pitching hasn't been great. A number of stars are underperforming. We could take an in-depth look into the underlying numbers, but sometimes an obvious statistic can tell you all you need to know.
The Royals simply are not scoring enough runs on a consistent basis.
Kansas City is 27th in all of baseball with only 191 runs scored. The ball club's offense has underperformed throughout the campaign. Sure, it is not all the lineup's fault that the Royals are losing games, but their offensive performance has not helped matters.
Bobby Witt Jr. continues to play at an MVP level. He is hitting .301/.372/.482 to go along with seven home runs. He is tied with Salvador Perez for the team lead in long balls.
Speaking of Perez, however, he is hitting just .199 with a .592 OPS. Vinnie Pasquantino has not been any better, as he is hitting .194 to go along with a .605 OPS and five home runs.
Maikel Garcia had a strong start to the year, but he is now hitting just .262/.327/.390 overall.
Witt is an incredible player, but even he needs help.
In all reality, the Royals are not a bad team. They feature no shortage of talent on the roster. Kansas City simply needs more players to perform up to their expectations.
There are not many teams that rank 27th in runs scored and still end up finding overall success.
The Royals are currently 20-29 overall and in last place in the American League Central standings. They would love to compete in the AL Central, but the ball club is performing well below its expectations at the moment.
Kansas City's lack of run scoring has been a concern in the team's current series against the Boston Red Sox. On Monday, the Red Sox earned a 3-1 win. Boston then defeated Kansas City 7-1 on Tuesday night.
The Royals' lineup is going to need to step up on Wednesday in order to avoid a series sweep. First pitch for the final contest of the series between the Red Sox and Royals is scheduled for 7:40 PM EST in Kansas City.
