Arizona State’s baseball’s Big 12 Player of the Year, Landon Hairston Jr., faced ejection in his latest match against Nebraska. Fans have expressed dismay over the officials and the NCAA rules, urging them to reconsider their rules.

On May 31, 2026, Hairston and his team locked horns with Nebraska at the NCAA Tournament Lincoln Regional at the Hawks Field at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, Nebraska. The controversy took place during the bottom of the fourth inning, where, while facing the Nebraska pitcher Cooper Katsee, Hairston took a close pitch on the outside corner for a called strike three.

After striking out of a called third strike, he reacted instantly, launching his bat high into the air in frustration. This action immediately triggered a loud and strong reaction from the opponent’s dugout, and after a brief consultation, Hairston was officially ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct. According to the NCAA rules, he will now also not play in his team’s next game.

A clip of this moment is going viral online and was shared by 11Point7 College Baseball on X. The tweet read:

“Landon Hairston Jr. has been ejected from the game in Lincoln for unsportsmanlike conduct. Will now be suspended next game whether that is later today or opening day 2027.”

This drew major backlash from the fans, who took a dig at the umpire’s decision. One of them wrote:

“Umpire completely blew strike three then backed it up by ejecting him these umpires are a joke.”

Calling out the umpires for their reaction, another follower tweeted:

“No other sport ejects stars in the postseason more than college baseball. Cam Canarella AJ Gracia Kevin Schnall Now Landon Hairston Jr. Bad strike call. Worse reaction from the umpires. Do better, NCAA, do better.”

One of the fans, calling it a joke and taking a dig at the NCAA, wrote:

“What a joke. Best player in college baseball ejected in the biggest moment in his career. NCAA never fails to be a terrible organization.”

Another user on X expressing their frustration over the ejection commented:

“Should’ve thrown that bat at the umpire for that horrible call.”

Defending the Arizona State’s player, one of the fans chimed in:

“My goodness can these umps make it anymore about themselves… obviously was going to toss the bat for a walk on ball 4 and instead flipped it as it was called strike 3. Use some common sense. Totally different if he didn’t think it was ball 4. Get rid of umpires completely.”

Despite this controversy, Arizona State defeated Nebraska 11-8 in the NCAA Lincoln Regional elimination game.

Arizona State’s coach defends his player, Landon Hairston, after ejection​

After the suspension of Landon Hairston during the match against Nebraska, Arizona State’s coach, Willie Bloomquist, gave a statement on the ejection during the press conference. Defending his player, he said that a warning in a highly emotional and intense game would have been ideal.

Stating that he will always support his player even if it comes at the expense of him looking bad.

“Yeah, I figured we were probably going to have to address that at some point in time. Listen, I don’t advocate for the bat flip right there, but on the same token, I’ve been around Landon Harrison all year. If I know Landon like I think I do, he was more frustrated with himself taking that pitch and it and it looked a lot worse than he meant it to look, I’m sure. I would have really liked to have seen a warning in that situation,” said Arizona State’s coach.

He added:

“This was an intense game with a lot of emotions running high. Have some feel, I guess is what I would say. And yeah, I’m going to defend my player no matter what. Maybe at the expense of me looking bad.”
