Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski finds himself in a difficult situation after the latest injury to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. With backup quarterback Michael Penix Jr. also not practicing because of a knee injury and Trevor Siemian released Wednesday morning with an injury settlement, the Falcons are bringing in veteran quarterback Cooper Rush.
Tagovailoa is dealing with a “flare-up” that will keep him from fully participating in the early stages of Falcons training camp. Stefanski stressed that the injury is not serious and that the newly added quarterback is expected to join the training camp sooner rather than later.
“He will be out there sooner rather than later,” Stefanski said.
The injury situation in the quarterback room has driven many fans to the edge.
“Falcons assembling a literal Avengers squad of broken and backup level quarterbacks before August even starts. This entire franchise is completely cursed,” one fan wrote.
Falcons HC Kevin Stefanski Highly Confident About Tua Tagovailoa
After being released by the Miami Marlins this offseason, the Falcons stepped in to sign Tua Tagovailoa on a one-year, $1.215 million contract. The former fifth overall pick is presumed to be Atlanta’s starting signal-caller in the 2026 season.
Earlier in May, during the Falcons’ OTAs, Kevin Stefanski showed a lot of promise in Tagovailoa despite the quarterback’s struggling 2025 season.
“I think it’s [accuracy] the most important trait at the position,” Stefanski told reporters. “Some guys get better at it with tweaks to how they throw the ball, tweaks to their lower body, those types of things.
“All of our quarterbacks have this: to be able to let the ball go, and it’s going to where you want it to go. Not to say that you’re not going to miss throws in this profession. You’re going to miss throws, but all of our guys possess that innate quality of letting it go and knowing where they want it to go.”
In 2025, Tagovailoa threw for only 2,660 yards and 20 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. The Marlins even benched him in the final three games of the regular season. It remains to be seen if the change in scenery helps Tagovailoa revive his NFL career.
