July 29 (UPI) -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is out due to an injury "flare-up," coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Wednesday in Flowery Brach, Ga.
Stefanski, who met with reporters before the Falcons' first training camp practice, said the injury occurred a "few days ago." He did not specify if the issue related to Tagovailoa's upper or lower body.
"Tua is dealing with an injury right now," Stefanski said. "It's not long-term. He'll be out there sooner than later. But we'll work through that in the next couple days."
Tagovailoa, who struggled with concussions and hip issues through his first six seasons with the Miami Dolphins, was released in March. He went on to sign a one-year deal with the Falcons.
Stefanski said he would "not put a timetable on it" when asked about Tagovailoa's return, but said he expects to see him "sooner than later."
"I would tell you something flared up with him," Stefanski said. "I'm also not a medical professional, so I don't want to misspeak. ... But I would tell you he is getting better and I expect him to be out there shortly."
Fellow Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. also remains out as he recovers from ACL surgery. The Falcons released quarterback Trevor Siemian and signed veteran Cooper Rush on Wednesday.
Jack Strand, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Falcons in April, is the only other healthy quarterback on the roster.
The Falcons will host the Denver Broncos in their preseason opener Aug. 14 in Atlanta.
