Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs were outplayed 105-95 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday.

Wembanyama had a forgettable shooting night despite his 26 points and 12 rebounds. This prompted the NBA circuit to call out the French superstar’s struggles in his NBA Finals debut.

Wembanyama’s shooting struggles were evident as he went 6-for-21 from the field, connecting on 2-of-9 from the 3-point line.

His free-throw shooting was much better, going 12-for-13, and he finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 3 blocks.

Fans and analysts immediately shared their thoughts on Wembanyama’s offensive performance, with one user writing, “ON HIS WAY TO PASSING LEBRON JAMES… FOR THE WORST FINALS PERFORMANCE IN NBA HISTORY.”

The criticism of Wembanyama continued, as Goodwin Sports’ Nate Jones posted, “Wemby is still a baby deer on offense. He has no rhyme or reason for what he does on offense. It’s not calculated or refined.”

“WEMBY… YIKES,” another account posted.

FS1’s Kevin Wildes remarked: “It’s like Wemby is going second against a very creative person in a game of HORSE.”

Basketball content creator Smiley didn’t mince words: “Wemby just maybe had one of the worst Finals clutch performances ever and I’m not seeing a single word about it on the TL.”

Dave Portnoy called the Knicks and Jalen Brunson better than the Spurs and Wembanyama: “Congrats to the Knicks on the NBA title. Tonight was no fluke. They are better than the Spurs. Brunson is better than Wemby.”

“That Wemby performance was horrific dude he looked completely lost,” another user commented.

The Knicks clawed back to erase the 14-point second-half deficit before going on an 11-0 run to take Game 1.

On the game front, Stephon Castle had 17 points and 8 rebounds. Julian Champagnie recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Dylan Harper came off the bench to prop up 16 points.

The Knicks were the better team on Wednesday on both ends of the floor. Jalen Brunson, who led New York’s late-game charge with 30 points, struggled from the field as well, shooting 12-for-31.

Josh Hart’s 15 rebounds were crucial, as were Karl-Anthony Towns’ 18 points and 12 rebounds. OG Anunoby and Landry Shamet had 17 and 13 points, respectively.

Both teams meet again on Friday for Game 2 at the Frost Bank Center, where the Spurs hope to even the series.
