Things got testy early in Saturday’s game between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky. In the last two seasons, the Sky-Fever rivalry was defined by Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, but with Reese now on the Atlanta Dream after an offseason trade, new players are keeping it going.
While going for a transition layup during a back-and-forth first quarter, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was thwacked in the face by Sky guard DiJonai Carrington and went crashing to the hardwood. In the aftermath of the play, the two players had to be separated after Cunningham took exception to the hard foul.
Ultimately, Carrington was assessed a flagrant 2 foul after video review and ejected from the game. However, it didn’t take long to hear from her.
“WHITE PRIVILEGE,” she posted on Threads, tagging the Indiana Fever’s official account on the platform.
Not her first controversy
This is far from the first time Cunningham has been involved in extracurriculars this season. The last few weeks of WNBA discourse have been dominated by a debate on transgender athlete participation in women’s sports that was, in large part, sparked by Cunningham’s comments on the topic.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” she told ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Days later, she doubled down.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” she said. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
The Sixth Player of the Year candidate has since called for the focus to return to basketball.
“There is so much good going on in the WNBA. I think basketball is being played at the highest level it’s ever been,” she told WISH-TV News in Indianapolis. “There’s just so much distraction. The WNBA media, all we ever do is cover everything except basketball. It’s like, what are we doing? You can talk about other things; I think those are great stories. It shows fans who people are outside of the court, but I also think we gotta keep the main thing the main thing.”
“I want to get back to basketball; it’s always been about basketball,” Cunningham insisted. “That interview happened in February when I was asked a question. And for me, I just want to make sure the focus stays where it should.”
However, after Carrington’s reaction, the media storm surrounding Cunningham doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon.
