Summary: If there is anywhere incoming freshman can come in and target early playing time, its obviously on special teams, but more specifically for an edge like Hazzard, it’s in the return game where you can lay down some blocks and hopefully make an impact. So lets get this out of the way early….I’m not saying Hazzard singlehandedly shifted the momentum in the Governors Cup, but the Franklin, TN product certainly played a big part early.
While a man of much less creativity would point to the “country boy edge” as a Jared Allen type, it is tough to ignore the fact that the farm town product was tossing bodies around like hay bales in high school, taking his team to four state championships and winning Mr. Football in the state of Tennessee. Hazzard, when interviewed last year, said he wanted to make an impact early, and modeled his play style to Gillotte and Puryear using them as the template to follow in order to cement a legacy here, and play at the next level. I know Hazzard has some studs at edge to sit behind this season, but he also has some studs to learn from as he looks to make his way into the rotation in 2026 and beyond. I like what I’ve seen from Eric so far, and I think he’s got much more in the tank to offer as his experience grows.
Speaking of having much more in the tank..shout out to Mrs. CardinalStrong as we celebrate 20 years of marriage today. I’m personally good to sign up for another 20 right now, her response is still TBD. “Love you like Eric Hazzard loves tackling people” ….that’s going in the card for sure.
