Martha Reeve national anthem performance.
Over the years, there have been several national anthem performances that have gone viral for all the wrong reasons, but the performance at the Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) debut on Saturday might be the worst one of all time.
The league chose Motown legend Martha Reeves to perform the national anthem before Saturday’s inaugural game, but it’s safe to say that it was not the performance that she hoped to give.
Martha Reeves is a music legend. She was the lead singer of the Motown group Martha and the Vandellas, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and have one of their hits, “Dancing in the Street,” listed in the United States Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.
However, while she has earned her place in music history, her national anthem performance was absolutely disastrous.
From the start, the rendition was shaky and out of sync with the backup singers, to put it mildly. The performance was so bad that the camera kept cutting to people in the crowd and even players on the field, and everybody seemed to be trying their best not to laugh.
‘Nothing could’ve prepared me’
Needless to say, the performance led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“You can literally see the American flag crying,” one fan wrote in a post on X.
“Nothing could’ve prepared me for any second of this,” someone else added.
“What if this has always been how its supposed to be sang and you guys just never knew it?” someone else joked.
“There are moments in life that make you wish you were deaf. This is one of them,” another person added.
“Absolutely nothing could’ve prepared me for what I was going to hear when I unmuted this video,” someone else wrote.
“I didn’t realize having ears would be a punishment today,” another person said.
Reeves Addresses the Performance
As her rendition began to go viral on social media for all the wrong reasons, Reeves issued a statement on social media.
“Having just celebrated my 85th birthday, I’ve learned a great deal over more than 60 years of performing live,” she wrote in a statement to TMZ. “It was an incredible honor to be invited to perform at the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League event and to help celebrate such a historic moment for women in sports. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
“The field conditions were wet and windy, and without stage monitors I wasn’t able to hear myself as I normally would. While it wasn’t the performance I had hoped for, I’m grateful to have been there in support of these remarkable athletes and this groundbreaking league.”
The performance overshadowed what was a historic night in women’s sports as it marked the first women’s pro baseball game played in the U.S. in nearly three decades.
