Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark has once again been forced to speak out against the hateful and racist messages that her fans have been spewing at an opposing player. This time, it comes after Alyssa Thomas received death threats after making incidental contact with Clark’s neck, leading to her suspension.

While Clark does agree that the foul should have been a flagrant foul, which led to Thomas’ suspension, she strongly spoke out against the hate that Thomas has been receiving.

Thomas Receives Death Threats

Following the incident, Thomas spoke to the media, where she revealed that she had been targeted with death threats and racial harassment following the play, calling the response from fans “unacceptable.”

“It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this over basketball,” Thomas said via ESPN. “A lot of us — myself included — didn’t even know the play took place until after the game. Now we’re being painted as thugs. There’s death threats out on us. It’s really unacceptable. It’s something that needs to change in this league, and I’m just really sick and tired of it.”

In a report this week, The Athletic reported that it has obtained screenshots of nearly a dozen of those messages that were directed at Thomas and her family.

Clark Condemns the Hate

While Clark does believe that the incident did merit a flagrant foul and called on the officials to do a better job of protecting players, she also spoke out against the hate that Thomas has been receiving.

“As I’ve stood up here and said before, like the harassment, the hate, none of that is okay,” Clark said during her media availability on Friday. “That goes for the opposing team we play. That goes for my teammates. That goes for my coaches. There should never be a question of character. Like, I’ve always stood up here and said that, and that’s truly what I believe. That’s how I was raised.”

The Indiana Fever are set to return to action on Sunday with a showdown against the Las Vegas Aces. Clark, however, will not be in the lineup as she remains sidelined with an injury that is unrelated to the incident with Thomas.
