Following Jack Catterall scoring a wide decision win over Shakhram Giyasov over the weekend, he’s now turning his attention to what’s to come as he looks for his next shot. 140 lb champion Rolly Romero was previously ordered to defend his title against the winner, and with Catterall now looking in his direction Catterall shares some thoughts on his most recent win and his immediate future.
Catterall on his win over Giyasov
“This way my night tonight, my piece of the puzzle, my world title…There was no doubt in my mind that I was going to win a world title but let’s be realistic, it’s boxing and anything can happen. I’ve put to bed the Taylor stuff and the rematch, etc., that was done, do you know what I mean? But I’m in good form, I feel fit, I feel well. What an opportunity to fight under the pyramids, I got my piece of gold tonight.”
On whether that was his career-best performance
“I’m my own worst critic. I’ll be back in the gym next week with the lads, we’ll watch it back and we’ll be better. But I felt comfortable in the ring, I felt strong — listen, I do the work in the gym, I don’t cut no corners, so I went out there and did what I had to do.”
On whether he intends on targeting Rolly Romero
“Yeah. I’ve seen this week he’s retired, he’s not retired. Listen, my sole focus tonight was Shakhram Giyasov, we’ve done that, time to sit down. I said it in the ring, Sam Jones, unbelievable job, Eddie Hearn — leave it with the guys, I’m confident they’ll put it out the bag and get me a massive fight whether that’s Rolly or another massive fight at the 147 division.”
