JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — ETSU’s quarterback competition could soon be entering its final stage.
The Buccaneers took the field Saturday for their first scrimmage of fall camp, giving head coach Will Healy another opportunity to evaluate a quarterback battle that remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the team entering the 2026 season.
Healy previously said the competition had narrowed to three candidates: returning quarterback Jake McNamara and transfers Mason Mims and Jadyn Davis. Following Saturday’s scrimmage, Healy indicated the Bucs could be getting closer to an answer.
“We’re going to have to start making some decisions,” Healy said. “I’d like to narrow it down to two for next week and then have a starter by the end of next weekend. I think the sooner we can make that decision, the better it’ll be for our team.”
Healy added that while ETSU does not have a clear starter yet, he has a sense of where the competition is heading.
“Right now, we are lacking a guy, but I feel like I know where this thing’s heading,” Healy said.
The next test will be how each quarterback responds after reviewing Saturday’s performance. Healy said the team’s theme for the 2026 season, “Man in the Mirror,” will play a role in that evaluation.
“The real question to me will be, how do they respond tomorrow? Because it is going to be an honest session,” Healy said. “You fix you first, and they are going to absolutely hear about it tomorrow. And how do they respond?”
ETSU returns to the field for its next scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 15. Healy hopes to have the competition narrowed to two quarterbacks before ultimately naming his starter.
