An interesting change is coming to the NFL rules in the 2026 season and fans across the nation are not overly keen on the idea.
Head coaches have been the only person on a team able to throw a challenge flag, but that is now set to change.
The 2026 season is going to see another member of a team’s coaching staff become eligible to throw the red flag.
A decision on who will also be eligible to hold the responsibility will have to be shared with the officials prior to kick-off on game day.
It will mark a fairly significant change to the rules in the NFL, with the power balance being shifted away from the head coaches, if they choose to offer out the responsibility.
One thing that is certain is that not all fans have taken to the development, with many sharing their frustrations over social media.

NFL fans left concerned by rule change for 2026 season
The new tweak to the rules was not announced at the annual meeting earlier in the year, with the owners not getting to vote on this specific change.
It is an update that is going to see coaches across the league handed a significant responsibility, which is worrying some supporters across the league.
‘Hate this. This should only ever be a HC’s responsibility,’ replied one fan on X.
Another concerned fan took to social media to respond: ‘This isn’t gonna end well lol’.
The rule change could be viewed as a way to free up the head coach during the action, with one coach specifically taking on the role of determining when to throw the challenge flag.
However, some fans remain unconvinced: ‘Don’t see when this would ever come in play or be useful’.
One fan even called out the commissioner: ‘An absolute shame. Goodell is the worst’.
It must be noted that not all head coaches may hand out the responsibility, with some unlikely to take the power away from themselves.
‘No head coach should be giving up this responsibility,’ added another fan.
There are certainly some coaches, like Dom DiSandro, who fans are eyeing up as the ideal candidates to take on the new role.
But there will likely be numerous head coaches unwilling to dish out the power of the red challenge flag.
