The Athletic's Ted Nguyen published an article last week, "Ty Simpson film review: Is the Alabama QB worthy of a first-round NFL Draft pick?". Gemini summarized the article thusly:

While he is widely considered the No. 2 quarterback in the class behind Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Ty Simpson's draft stock is a subject of intense debate due to a season of two halves and physical red flags.

Arguments for a First-Round Pick

  • Pro-Style Readiness: Simpson played in a sophisticated passing system under offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Scouts value his ability to execute NFL-style concepts, particularly his aggressiveness and accuracy when throwing into tight windows over the middle of the field.
  • Early Season Dominance: Through his first eight games, Simpson posted elite numbers (20 touchdowns to one interception) and a high EPA per drop-back. Proponents argue this "peak" version of Simpson—before illness and injury took hold—is the true indicator of his NFL potential.
  • High Floor: He is described as a fundamentally sound "coach's son" with a high football IQ and the pre-snap processing abilities required to manage a professional offense.

Arguments Against a First-Round Pick

  • Size and Durability: Measuring just over 6-foot-1 and 211 pounds, Simpson falls into the lower percentiles for NFL quarterbacks. Critics point to his late-season struggle with gastritis (which caused a 20-pound weight loss) and a season-ending rib injury as evidence that his frame may not withstand NFL physicality.
  • Lack of Experience: With only 15 collegiate starts, Simpson is viewed by some as an unfinished product. Historically, quarterbacks with such limited starting experience face a steep learning curve in the pros.
  • Performance Volatility: His play declined significantly in the final seven games of the season. While some attribute this to health issues and a lack of a supporting run game at Alabama, others worry he struggled as opposing defenses gathered more film on him.
  • Physical Limitations: Unlike other "undersized" successful quarterbacks (like Kyler Murray or Michael Vick), Simpson is primarily a pocket passer rather than an elite scrambler, making him a statistical outlier if he is to succeed at the next level.
Ultimately, the author, Ted Nguyen, concludes that while Simpson's mental processing gives him a safe floor, his physical limitations and lack of experience make him more of a third-round talent who might only be pushed into the late first or second round due to a weak overall quarterback class.
The gastritis thing would be a major concern if you dressed near him in the locker room.

He's got elite processing ability according to everyone around him, and this was noted in his interviews. He's really good at throwing over the middle of the field (a staple of the Shanna-Vay system). He has good, not great, arm strength and is a decent athlete moving around the pocket. He's a really good rhythm passer.
Thx krang. Does that add up to take him third? Not being snarky.

NOOOOOO. His lack of starts is a huge risk and obviously, his play down the stretch warrants concern.

I don't think his detractors are being fair to the circumstances of his season. The offense around him 100% relied solely on him to drive the team. There was a rash of injuries and he himself was injured and also lost 20 lbs due to gastritis. Few QBs would continue to play well under those circumstances.

But at the top of round two or a trade up into round one SHOULD be a consideration. His play during the first eight games was elite.

I was trying to think of a legit comparison for Ty Simpson and in some ways he reminds me of Jake Plummer. I think Plummer was more of a “gamer” where Simpson is more of a student of the game, but physically they are very similar. People knocked Jake for his slim build and good but not great arm strength. Jake could throw some wobblers, but he also threw darts when he was really on. Simpson is probably as good or better in arm strength and overall athleticism. Obviously Jake was a local hero and had significantly more college starts, but they both seem to have an “it” factor. Simpson detractors point to his late season slide, but reports say he was dealing with either a health issue or injury that caused significant weight loss. When Simpson was really cooking earlier in the season, he had that ability to will Alabama to scoring drives and was willing to take a hit in order to deliver the pass.
Jake went around pick #41 (2nd round) and if the Cards can get Simpson at either 34 or slightly higher, the value seems fair.

I've detached emotionally from this team as of late
Dude, you make some valid points with your posts BUT, you're more emotionally attached than most. I'm not throwing any shade; I'm just an outside observer giving an opinion. We all need to take a break and see what happens in the draft. Then...the gloves come off ;)
Enjoy your weekend :)

Have you not read ASFN for the past couple months? There are multiple posters calling for that.
I think you're confusing being ok if ML wanted and then took him at 3. I want either edge of OT but If he's ML guy and he takes him, it won't bother me that is what most are saying.

This is me dream draft for the first 3 picks if Dallas decides Crosby isn't worth the 2 picks.

We have the option of waiting for him at 34 without burning assets to move up. If he’s gone so be it.

It would be so Cardinalsesque to draft Simpson, he shows a little bit of promise so they eschew drafting a top QB in a good QB class.

Well Gandhi kinda is. If MLF loves him then don't mess around and insure you get him, even with pick #3.
I agree that he won't be the pick at #3.
What?! No, absolutely not. I would be okay with him toward the end of round 1, but certainly not at #3 overall.
