Did you see nussmeier stock on the rise? Would you take him at 34? Was hoping he would be available at 65….not gonna be the case… been compared to Tony romo..I will take it if we go edge or ot at 3
Yes, I would certainly consider it. I know I am in the minority, but personally I would consider Carson Beck at #34, but that is mostly because I think he is more pro-ready. Unless they go with Simpson (or sign someone like Daniel Jones in FA), I feel like the preference should be to get through the next season, and then in the next draft you can hopefully find a solution. I don’t believe much in the narrative that next year will be the best QB-year ever, but I can tell that at least this year is not good, so right now I am leaning more to a stopgap for this season - of course with the hope that he will turn into a great starter. Try to go .500 at minimum. And yes, that could also mean going with Nussmeier.

Anyway, to keep it in the point of the thread, I don’t think that strategy will change whether they go with LaFleur or Kubiak, but it might if it is Weaver with some OC.

Im curious why you think that? LaFleur is working with better personnel and doesn’t call plays.
Well, to start with the last, I don’t care at all about that. Neither did several other Rams-OC’s, and they have been highly successful as playcalling head coaches with other teams.

Why do I prefer LaFleur? I guess it is just that I think he seems more like a head coach, whereas Kubiak strikes me as the better offensive coordinator. And LaFleur has a lot better connections in terms of filling out a coaching staff - not that it definitely matters, but it certainly helps.

Do you prefer Kubiak?

Yes, not by a ton and it’s mostly guesswork with coordinators moving to HC spots. He seems to have everyone on the Seattle offense playing at a very high level.

Matt LaFleur and Coen both called plays as offensive coordinators the year before they were hired as head coaches, they just didn’t do it on the rams.

That is also my stance. I once heard a theory regarding the “offensive genius”-title, that you should always look at who they have elevated. Is it a great player or someone not quite to that level. Well, I think it is fair to argue that Sam Darnold is a worse quarterback than Matt Stafford. But it is of course a non-scientific argument and not at all true in all cases.

Having said that, some years ago, as the passing game coordinator with the Niners, LaFleur made Jimmy Garoppolo play like a stud. That is certainly not a great quarterback that he elevated, but obviously it is a long time ago.

Well, Mike LaFleur called plays for two years.

Also, I just like the fact that he has been multiple years with both the Niners and the Rams. I think that speaks volume.

Fun fact about Jimmy G: Jimmy Garoppolo has reached the milestone of eight conference championship games in his NFL career. This achievement is tied for the third-most by a quarterback in NFL history, only behind Tom Brady and Joe Montana. Garoppolo has participated in these games across three different teams: the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Rams.

No, not until after the Super Bowl. However, it will probably be reported.
Kind of, because we have permission from the Seahawks, we can come to terms at any point, but he cannot sign until after the SB. After today, nothing is supposed to be reported until after the SB. The NFL only wants SB related news this week. This is the different in when we hired JG, we did not have permission from the Eagles prior to the SB and we have already contacted him.

  • While Jonathan Gannon was still the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator, Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort contacted him during a prohibited period — specifically in the days after the NFC Championship Game but before the Super Bowl.
  • NFL rules forbid teams from contacting coaches on other staffs during certain windows unless proper permission is granted.
So, if we hire someone else, it technically also cannot be reported until after the SB starting tomorrow. While it will most likely leak, no press conference until next week.

We'll most likely find out backwards when either us or the Raiders sign or enter negotiations with their backup candidate.

If Raiders start doing things with Evero, that would be a good sign. If it's LaFluer (or one of our bottom choices), it's likely the other way.

Of course, Kubiak could choose neither.

Did we even get a chance to interview Kubiak? Sounds like the Raiders were interviewing him all day and into the evening. I guess Michael and Monty may have gotten five minutes with him before he went to sleep...

I’m in agreement here. Exhibit A: Mike McCoy was once Peyton Manning’s OC. Exhibit B: Bill O’Brien was once Tom Brady’s OC.

Neither of these guys were successful HC’s, yet each has had multiple chances to display their “genius.”

We really ended up being last in a coach pick same way we ended up with a GM no one else wanted and hired last. Great way to run a franchise
