My son is in 12u travel ball. Umping that is a combination of trying to call balls and strikes to 4’10” kiddos and dealing with privileged parents. When my son played little league, it was a mess

2010 played Chandler National Little League for a while. Umps were always good and it still seemed like a tough job. Plate umps in Phoenix in August and May? No thank you.

Can’t imagine what it’s like at a tournament or something with a bunch of parents paying — what? $8k a season plus kits and equipment?

Coach Jonathan Gannon said Friday morning "we'll see how it goes" for all the limited players, including Murray, but not surprisingly, he provided little hint of Murray's Sunday status.

Thanks! I got fired from my coaching gig (felt real bad and still grieving but it was also a bucket-list item for me; kid is thriving with a new club), but reffing keeps me in the game and active. I have a little crew with 2010 (who’s saving for a car) and 2011.

I had security escort me out in a tournament where I centered a U17 final last season (prolly too early for me to be doing that). Great day.


I was watching another ref the other day. He just told the coach “my AR called it” and moved on. The best thing about reffing 11v11 games is the fields too big to hear coaches and parents as a center unless you want to.

2010 likes solo centering 7v7s which is NOT for me. Those parents are usually loud and wrong, which is a bad combo.

I was refereeing soccer when I was in Illinois, both club and high school. High School games sometimes sucked because if it wasn't varsity you were very likely working the game alone--keeping up with a bunch of 15-16 yr old boys was impossible on that big field. I once did 11 games as center in ONE tournament--including 3 back to back championship games to end the weekend, that was brutal--I was exhausted for like 2 days after. Also broke my leg while on the field reffing (tibial plateau) not fall or impact, just running, I thought I just strained something and finished the last 10 minutes of the game limping along on a broken leg.

I don't have the time to ref anymore and now being 52 and with a bad hip I think I am done, I overall really enjoyed it.

That’s awesome. Solo centering an 11 v 11 match is unimaginable. I did a 9v9 with two parents calling OOB and it sucked.

I’ve worked with some really good senior refs who still get around an 11v11 field and know/see/feel the game well enough not to have to run box to box like I am. I’ve got tons of respect for those codgers.

If you ever change your mind I’m sure your assignor can find some academy matches where you could basically set up a lawn chair in the center circle. Did an end of season tournament last year where every coach for the 4-a-side games said they’d never had a referee.

I’ll happily debate the ethics of clubs collecting fees from parents for U8 players. I have zero confidence those kids are getting more benefit and development than they’d get in rec and some encouragement from their folks.

Yeah. Our club’s academy program is $1k per season plus kits and tournaments. I just don’t know what most kids will get out of that really vs an ego trip for the parents.

2011 isn’t going to play in the World Cup or anything but we’re happy with his 2 rec seasons per year until he was ready for 9v9 (U11). I remember him being one of the three best players on his U10 team and thinking he was more likely to get bored and quit in that environment than keep playing and get better. Thats when we made the choice to move up to club.

He’s a good passer and reads the game exceptionally well for a player at his level, but he probably would have been better off working on ball mastery with a lot of that time.
