the Shemar Stewart thing is as interesting as the 2nd round hold up

I would think the NCAA would cave in about 10 secs if Stewart pursued action to allow him to play college football in 2025 and then go back to the draft in 2026.

I would also think that the NFL would be on Bengals as they dont want the precedent of a drafted player simply going back to school -- where maybe they make (for 1 year) enough to be worth it.

but he wont make enough for it to be worth it.

if a player opts to snub the team that drafted him and re enter the draft the following year...he will lose at least 1 round in his draft status...maybe more.
Draft picks have value and no team is going to risk a high value pick on a guy who has already proven he is a trouble maker.
The difference in contracts between a late first rounder and an early to mid third rounder is substantial.
at pick 17 the contract is roughly 20 million...but at 64 its about 5....and thats assuming a small drop from mid first to late second....and the drop will happen...he could go back to college and post 20 sacks and still no team will use a first round pick on him next year.

It's not, though. I mean, why do I care if he misses the first two weeks of camp? Cornerback is arguably our most stocked position right now. We really don't need him as a starter from Day 1. We have ST5 and Melton and maybe Elijah Jones has value.
Yeah, if anything he can play "dude coverage" when we play man which I expect us to do more this year.

Interesting, based on the upgrades to the front 7 and JGs history of preferring to rush 4 and play zone behind it I was thinking more zone this year. Especially since W. Johnson is better in zone than M2M.
I think Rallis wants to blitz more because we got more aggressive as last season went on. That should increase the number of turnovers that we get. We have been below average in forcing turnovers since Gannon has been here.

I don't have any special insight. That was just my interpretation of how we seem to be heading. You could well be right that we blitz less and play a lot of zone.

he did adjust. But it was due to our inability to win one on ones and get to the passer without blitzing.
But you cant blitz all the time...the element of surprise is part of why it works...once expecting it any decent QB will eat you alive hitting the hot routes

This is not a Elway/Manning situation, where he refuses to play for a certain team. All other 31 teams know that the Bengals are weird and this would be a non-issue for all other teams. If Stewart plays well, I doubt it will impact his draft status much.

Stewart is not entirely innocent in this.
He did in fact go out and hire the one agent in the business that is known to be the most difficult to deal with. That clearly shows intention on his part.
It will in fact hurt his return to the draft. Purely as a matter of principle...nfl owners are petty like that

I recommend the podcast again. They go into detail about how Burrow, Chase and Higgins had to get the same agent and making a plan together to make it as difficult for the team as possible to get around giving them all fair extensions

Burrow, Chase & Higgins are not only proven vets, but stars. It makes perfect sense for a guy in their situation to hire a pitbull agent to strong arm a known tightwad organization.
But not a rookie who has only proven (1.) Jack, and (2.) crap, in the NFL.
What it shows is a priority to "Get Mine" rather than a dedication to "Get Better" and prove one's value.

I strongly believe that playing a shell defense with a strong pass rush is how you win in the modern NFL.

I get your point. I just think it has much less impact because it involves the Bengals and the horrific history of how they handle contracts
