The difference a year makes - Seattle at State Farm Stadium

Last season the players were playing well and our coaches snatched defeat from victory. Having already cost us the Bears' game, coaching once again ruined our day at home.

If you remember, young Josh Rosen was tearing it up on our drive and leading us toward the end zone in a 17-17 ball game when the coaches decided we were close enough and they ran it on three consecutive plays to set up a Dawson-missed FG and give Russell Wilson and company 1:52 left on the clock...needing only a FG. Of course we lost 20-17 as Seattle got into FG range for the win.

After the game, Wilks all but sealed his fate saying that despite the result (loss) he would play to set up the FG if he could do it all over again.

As pathetic as we were last season - we were more competitive vs Seattle at home.

Heck, we lost in Seattle by 3 also (27-24). It'll be interesting to see how we fare up there this season in comparison.

In that one game sure, but as the season goes this year's team has been far more competitive overall than last years team and I would suspect that like last year the team will play a little better as the season progresses.

There's some ups and downs in every season, but I worry that "No one is coming to save us" is going to become a frequently quoted Kingsbury-ism in the future.

Maybe we ought to run DJ 5 times each 1/4 no matter what - be stubborn about it - see what happens?

I said he was tearing it up on that last drive in a 17-17 ballgame, not the entire game. Crisp passes to Ricky Seals Jones, Kirk, DJ, etc. Crowd was electric. We were driving down the field...until Wilks stopped us and ran it three times to set up a FG by Dawson with just under 2 minutes left. It was idiotic coaching that cost us that game.

Neither QB really tore it up last year. Wilson's 90.5 QBR to Rosen's 88.5 QBR.

Much closer than this year's week 4 matchup: Wilson's 123.6 QBR to Murray's 85.3 QBR.

If we lose to the awful Bengals, I think people will need to stop saying this year is an improvement over last season.

While that would suck it wouldn't change my mind. Ultimately we are playing on the road in an early game against a team that is just as desperate for a win as we are. If we lose badly I will likely agree with you, but if we lose a close game I don't think it necessarily suggests that we are worse than last year.

A loss is a loss. If we lose Sunday, 2018 would have started out better than 2019 as in Week 5, we beat an equally hapless 49er team with no issues.

It's not as simple as win/loss record. There are a lot of things that go into what your record is and it's not as simple as "well we had 1 more win this time last year so we must be worse". This team has been competitive in almost every game they have played thus far and that simply was not the case last year. Sure if we go 0-15-1 or 1-14-1 or something like that it would probably be fair to say we are worse, but those records would be a long ways away.
