In Arizona he took one of the worst teams in all of sports and changed a culture and took them to a Super Bowl. He failed with Kevin Kolb? Max Hall? John Skelton? I'm not sure how you blame him for that. I'm amazed he got anything out of that group to be honest. Marriota? Didn't they just fire their HC again? Again, he gets a wrap as failing with a young QB which is clearly false since he took a rookie to a Super Bowl. Just saying, he is going somewhere and all of these names being thrown around, there are no guarantees. Wilks was considered a good option too.

Is this because he failed with Leinart? Most people blame Leinart for his own failure. Can't have it both ways.

I'm not saying that Whisenhunt's record is perfect, but he is getting a HC job and he probably deserves it.

Yes, as OC...not HC. He is a fantastic OC. He benefited greatly from Denny's players, once the team was filled with 'his' players it wasn't so great. If your success is contingent upon having a HOF QB, that is tough to swallow.

I don't think that ever happened but when he was the OC under McCoy he excelled. When he left the Chargers suffered.

It's strange to me how so many people are advocating coordinators and unknowns and Whisenhunt is dismissed. He is a huge part of the success in San Diego. He has experience as a HC with success and failures and I'm sure he has learned a thing or two. I would be happy as hell with Whiz as HC and Bowles as DC. You could do a lot worse.

Come on now, you know very well we went to the Superbowl inspite of Whiz. It was 5000% Warner and Haley only!

Where McDaniels has an advantage is that he has already failed in his initial attempt to being a HC. He has learned that you have to win before you can create the New England culture and how they treat vet players. He didn't understand that when he took the Denver job.

Mike Vrabel is their first year coach and just led them to a 9-7 record just missing out on the playoffs. No firing there.

Lots of good choices out there. Bidwill is paying $10 million plus to fire this coaching staff. You better believe he is taking this decision seriously

He also failed in TN with young QBs and failed here to identify a QBOTF. He insisted on the "system works" despite not having the QB to run that system after Warner retired. He is a guy who is a better OC than HC, TN proved what he does as a HC without a HOF QB, they were rarely even competitive--he had as many wins as Steve Wilks and had 7 more games to get them.

NE prides itself on on holding every player as accountable as any other. Brady gets ripped just like any other player and in front of other players. That goes for all of the guys. Bill also has a my way or the highway mentality which is unique in New England. That is one of the reasons the organization is able to let vet leaders go without having a negative impact on the culture. There is a true next man up belief, but that translates into an inherent fear of being replaced and constant discomfort. Not many players are used to or prefer that atmosphere. However, they are willing to tolerate it if they believe that it gives them a higher chance to win a Super Bowl which is has shown to WITH BELICHICK AND BRADY. It has not translated to other orgs because you have to win prior in order to enforce it.

Thanks. I know they’ve always been willing to part ways with talented players, but my understanding was as long as they had Brady they considered others expendable (Chandler Jones, Malcom Butler, etc).

I certainly remember Eric Bieniemy, the player. I understand that he's the OC for the Chiefs, and that apparently means something. Wasn't he also the OC there under Alex Smith? I don't remember that offense being very special, especially in the playoffs. I guess my point is that I'm not sure Bieniemy has anything to do with KC's current offense. Reid makes all the offensive decisions there & Mahomes would make any coach look good. Someone enlighten me, as I'm sure I might be missing something with Mr. Bieniemy.

I think Wilks was doomed from the start largely because he put a crappy staff together, with 2 ham & eggers for coordinators who proved to be hot garbage. So, coordinators are crucial as the rebuild starts IMHO. David Shaw? Why not? Yes, he's a "college guy", but he has a ton of NFL assistant experience before winding up as Stanford's HC. Highly respected guy, would get player buy-in immediately. With the right staff, which I firmly believe he could assemble, he could be a home run.
