Heard Jurecki mentioning that the Bears would like to talk to Bettcher about a role in Chicago. I don't think a lateral move is within limits unless the Cardinals FO is planning on letting James walk. Could signify that the FO has no intention of keeping him on staff for another one of their interviewees and have already removed him from consideration for the HC position.

Interesting to note too is this news happens the day Wilks interviews. Wilks, along with almost every other candidate the Cardinals interviewed, are from 4-3 teams.

Maybe they'll embarrassingly schedule a press conference to announce his hire before he agrees to his contract.

Oh wait.

4-3 looks like the future, Keim knows we lack a true 3-4 NT and are very thin at linebacker. Quite possible we will be thin at LB next season.

Bettcher might not be retained.

Possibly but aren't we just as far if not further from having the right pieces for a 4-3?

I think we have better pieces for a 4-3 than a 3-4.

DE: Jones, Nkemdiche
DT: Peters, Pierre
OLB: Reddick, Golden
MLB: ?
Since we don’t have a MLB we’ll just use two safeties to compensate.

Because of less practice time available it’s easier to coach and execute a 1 gap system than that zone stuff Bettcher was trying to implement.

I prefer continuity. We finally have our OLB who just had a career year. One of if not the best defensive players this year and we're going to change his role and make him one dimensional? Not to mention everyone will have to learn a new system. It's going to take time to adjust. We would also have to redo much of our depth.

Golden is not a 4-3 LB save maybe a 2 down thumper/run stuffer MLB, but in a 4-3 your LB's have to be very quick and excel in coverage which is something Golden does not do. Also in a 4-3, typically your MLB is your primary communicator. Not sure he can do that either. Reddick is potentially the only 4-3 capable LB we have.

I just find 3-4 defenses to be more versatile, unpredictable and cheaper to build and maintain than 4-3's.

Also, if you are worrying about playing zone, get ready for a lot of it if Wilks is hired. If I remember correctly his defense led the league in zone coverage at almost 80% of their defensive snaps.

Well, let's see:

DL-Jones, Gunther, Peters, Nkemdiche
OLB-Golden, Reddick
MLB-This is where you got me. Maybe Martin but he's really not MLB material

Of course this would leave Bucannon as the odd man out as the safety field is crowded and he's even less cut out as a LB in a 4-3 as he was in a 3-4.

To be honest, our current roster would really need to be shaken up if we're going to go 4-3.

If you're assigning positions based on physical traits and tackling/rushing/coverage abilities, you would line up the 4-3 linebackers
with Golden as your monster in the middle, and Reddick as OLB.

As stated before, we have two of the best defenders in the league on our D and we don't want to shift things around to make them less potent.

That sound more like a Keim problem than a Bettcher problem.

getting a new HC means Bettcher is likely not on the team along with the rest of the old staff.

Restating the question:

With the acquistion of Bucc, Tyrann, Deeche and other hybrid types (that stress interchangeable plug 'n play options) aren't we fairly committed to staying with our current defensive system? How many years will we have wasted if we were to blow up our current setup?

Golden has the size to play D-end in a 4-3 and that was his position in College

DE: Jones, Golden
DE/DT: Nkemdiche, Gunter, K. Martin, Mauro, Pierre, Rucker
DT: Peters, Williams
OLB: Reddick, Bucannon
MLB: Bynes, G. Martin, Wright
