Lets assume, I think safely, that Goff and Carson Wentz are the first two QBs who go off the board in Round 1

So the Cardinals are sitting at 29, and Paxton Lynch of Memphis is on the board.

the pros on Lynch: a really good athlete with size. A very good arm that can make all sorts of throws. Apparently a high football IQ and team leader. Excellent game vs Ole Miss this year.

the cons: played the spread, so learning curve is steep. Game against Auburn was below average.

So: if you are Steve Keim--- do you pull the trigger there?

this is as much a hypothetical on if you take the (hopefully) QBOF at 29.

Absolutely. Dude is 6'7" and athletic plus he has a stronger arm than Brock. Perfect situation in he can sit for 2 years and learn the system.

He should be long gone though.

.

The problem is guys his size never turn into very good NFL starting QBs throughout history. Name one? And don't tell me Osweiller

I'd like to trade up in round 1 for a pass rusher ... how about Hackenberg in round 2?

Yes, would be happy if Cards took him.

This is what Scott Wright, Draft Countdown, says about Lynch.

Has the physical tools that NFL GMs are looking for but will need some time to get use to the level of competition and improve at getting the ball out and taking less hits. He has franchise QB potential and should be a starter but could really benefit if he has a veteran QB to learn from. Because of the lack of potential franchise QBs he will most likely be a top 10 pick but is more of a mid to late first round caliber talent at this point who should be given a year or two to develop before being thrown on the field.

He did well in a pro-style offense and a lot of people have said O'Brien might tab him as a QBOF for Houston, just a thought.

He never played all that well at Penn St. Let's call it ok. His production has never amounted to the hype out of HS regardless if he was in O'Briens offense or not.

I'm not buying the hype. Id take a flyer on Prescott in Rd 3 over Hackenberg in Rd 2 or 3 all day & everyday. :D

Isnt Flacco 6'6"? Ben, Newton and Peyton are at least 6'5". Don't see the problem with really tall QB's.

Derek Anderson didn't suck cause he was tall. He sucked because he just wasn't good.

Law of averages. 6'7'' & taller QB's are few & far between. Most are in the 6'1''-6'5'' range.

I understand the number is small but history says it's never happened for whatever reason. As you say QBs are generally in the 6'3" average.

We can generalize on a QB's talent. We can listen to these media draft guys. Us and all the media do not have a scouting staff, and do not have all the tape in conjunction with the other info which makes it valid (that including the football knowledge which makes one on a NFL payroll)... if Keim says pull the trigger and he is there, then I am going to feel rather good we have a decent chance of finding our franchise quarterback :)

I was underwhelmed by Lynch in his bowl game. Not interested.

Hackenberg's collegiate career was derailed by the coaching change. He is in no way shape or form a first round pick, but don't expect him to still be on the board by the time the Cardinals pick in round two.

The guy I like is Cardale Jones. He'd be a good fit for the Cardinals.

I would be pissed if we got Cardale Jones or Hackenberg. They played poorly in college. I see no reason to expect them to be better in the NFL.

As far as Lynch goes I can't see ruling him out simply because he is 6'7'' instead of 6'5''. I believe quarterbacks who have the luxury of coming in as a backup and learning the system and then taking over after 2-3 years have the best chance to succeed. Phillip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers are two examples. That would mean that now would be the best time to grab a good quarterback. I don't think he passes Philly and LA though

i do not watch college but based on your description, he sounds like a guy with huge potential that will need a red shirt year and he would be red shirted with us anyway. How is his accuracy?

looks like everything statistically improved every year and he played two years over 60% accuracy. I like the fact that every year he got better in every single category.

Fwiw: I am just not a fan of taking any QB that lasts past pick 45 or so--

As an analogy: I see taking a QB in that pick range as akin to playing blackjack. The odds are still against you, but they are as good as you will find in the casino

Taking a QB after that pick range is like buying a lottery ticket-- yes, they are cheap, and there is always a chance you can win, but the odds are terrible.

He's not 6'7":p

Like I said I don't know the reasons why. And it's been a smaller sample size, but those guys that tall have failed.

Maybe it's because they are taller than most Olineman & defenders can see there eyes better.

We'll never have a sample size big enough, 6 foot 7 athletes tend to be basketball or baseball players, at least the sub 300 pounders.

Yeah, 'cause that's a huge different in height lol You're clinging onto a losing argument, Bucky.
