Remember the similar argument on this board when Whiz started having success in AZ and was compared to Tobin, who, at the time, had taken AZ to it's only playoff berth and victory?

Yeah, that is what I was referring to. I think if the ultimate goal is getting that Super Bowl trophy then that trumps all else. The coaches and players that got the closest to winning it all achieved more than any other Cards team. IMO

Whiz is a good coach with a 3-foot Achilles heel and he refuses to do anything different to protect that vulnerability.

For the record from someone who took a mild potshot at him earlier in the thread ("the system works")

I thought he was a good coach for the team at the time: Talent assembled by Denny the GM, but an undisciplined mess from Denny the Coach

Give him credit: he saw what Warner could do, and went against a top 10 pick by the organization by going with him. The offense was tailored to Kurt.

Where he failed:

Even post SB when he became the defacto GM -- his offensive line moves pretty much all failed, and that led to Kurt retiring earlier than maybe he should have. It always felt like he was determined to show that Levi Brown could play LT at an acceptable level -- rather than RT or even guard.

His choice of QBs was pretty suspect-- Max Hall's total lack of NFL arm strength should have been apparent in practice.

The lack of o-line dev over time made it even harder. With a good offensive line and a running game -a Kevin Kolb could very well have been a Ryan Fitzpatrick like game manager that kept the team competitive until a better option came along. Instead, the entire offensive load rested on the QB making plays.

His insistence that Mike Miller could take over for Haley was another issue - and refusing the change even when it was apparent Miller was over his head

It just sounds like Whis was making many if the same mistakes in Tenn that he did here.

Ya'll show no respect for a coach who took us to the SB. I don't even care how you think we got there, that's a fact. You'll turn on BA too when he's done. Just like you turn on any player or coach who doesn't work out the way you imagine in your dreams.

He changed this franchise and deserves respect for that. He gave Michael Bidwill a taste of success, and it was sweet.

You laugh at the system works, but some of you are no different. Bash on players and coaches who are gone and praise some of the crappiest players on our roster (DWash and others) simply because they're current Cardinals.

Some of you sicken me. Especially those of you with nothing but sarcasm, with your system works garbage. That's lazy ****.

Agree with this to some extent. Being a head coach encompasses so much more than QB development however. And other than Denny's meltdown, I have a lot of respect for the guy, to this day. I think it's difficult for any of us to fathom how difficult it was to turn around a franchise like Arizona. Just getting them to believe and expecting to win is a monumental task.

My only contention was that Whisenhunt doesn't deserve ridicule. Apparently that's asking too much.

We had Warner playing great against much poorer division opponents IMO. I don't need a playoff win to see BA is clearly a better head coach and leader of men than the whiz! Who were the Qbs Warner used to get to light up, smith, hasselback, Trent green? I mean seriously BA has had to go against a SB team in Seattle with Wilson, a SB team in SF with kap, and a Rams team with a good d and a good coach on fisher. The division results are as weak an argument as him winning playoff games. I think it's pretty apparent Warner and Haley were the reason for our run with some help from the Edge who had a big part in it despite whiz trying to use Hightower way too much. Whiz is what he is a good coordinator and that is all, I'll be shocked if he gets another NFL head coaching gig, he's awful!

Good Gravy People--------can we just put this Whisenhunt apologist stuff to final rest. The man was passed on in Pittsburgh for a reason, ( or several ).

He did not lead us to the Superbowl, Todd Haley did the play calling that year. Whiz took over the play calling next year again and got our QB killed. He NEVER improved his offensive line while he was here, and flat REFUSED to replace his inept O-line coach. He NEVER helped our pass protection with TE help in any way, choosing instead to keep our O-Tackles on an island alone against even the best pass rushers.

The man was totally stubborn in the face of more than adequate evidence of the need for him to coach differently.

He was a poor offensive coordinator in San Diego.

He was a total failure in Tennessee. Can we please stop praising him here for taking us to the Super Bowl?
