lets hope cooper start to show something and also find sendlein replacement

If Cooper remains healthy, he will be fine. The trick for him is to....well....remain healthy.

I think Cooper has shown enough when he's in there that he can be a very good lineman. At this point, it's about getting meaningful reps.

Respectfully disagree--and so does the coaching staff.

So it's a coincidence that the one full game they let him play, a guy off our practice squad ran for 100 yards?

This is what happens when you have a skittish QB in the pocket---the OL are never sure where he is.

Yep.

He's not a great pass blocker but nobody is with CK in there.

Iupati was my #3 target for the Cards to add knowing the big time edge rushers wouldn't be available in FA behind Murray & Wisneski.

This guy isnt like signing Colledge or Snyder imo. He's nasty in the run game!!!

That looks like a break down in communication of the line pre snap. That can happen to even the best.

Now I'm not saying Iupati is a world beater in pass pro but with a QB like Palmer who tends to get the ball out of his hand and knows how to manage the pocket, should be a bit better than he has been the past couple years. Should look even better if we upgrade the center spot.

Backs are supposed to pick up from the outside in. Hyde probably should've come out to help Iupati. But for as good as Iupati is, I saw Jonathan Cooper better handle combo blocks and pick up a stunting DE than Iupati did in that one-sample-size study.

That outside blizter is a defensive back.

Depends on the scheme/call. Typically most backs first focus is the closest path to the QB, the A and B gap. On a twist/stunt/gap blitz, backs usually step up in the gap. Against an opponent that has a good edge rusher, the back will chip out.

Cooper has the physical tools to be good...but his mental makeup is questionable. So far his production on the field hasn't shown that he is very good yet. I haven't given up on him though...I still have hope that he'll be the player we drafted him to be.

The GM seems to think Cooper is making improvements. I think he will be ok of he can get to camp in shape.

An offensive line that was among the league's most ineffective in 2012 and 2013 now has the makings of an intriguing group if Jonathan Cooper pans out. General manager Steve Keim recently stated the team still has "huge expectations" after the 2013 first-round draft pick began showing his "natural bend, his athleticism, his speed" late in the 2014 season.

Ok, I will preface this by saying I hope Cooper comes around and becomes the player we thought he was when we drafted him.

That being said, when Cooper's biggest supporter (Keim) goes out and spends on the top dollar player who plays his position, the GM is acknowledging Cooper's lack of development.

They aren't quitting on him, but he is now switching positions and having to win the spot in his make or break season. That is not a ringing endorsement at all.

910 had Tim Kawakami on who covers the 49ers

His take on Iupati was that he is clearly a dominant run blocker- weaker in pass pro but also noted that he had ankle problems all last year that limited his mobility and performance. Said he made the pro bowl last year on reputation but noted that when healthy is a running game monster.

So its a coincidence idence that a guy we just signd for $6-$9M per season plays the exact same position as Cooper? That's a clear sign of the faith that this staff has in their franchise left guard?

Both are going to be starters this season, barring injury. One will move to RG.

Iupati is not the replacement for Cooper.

Cooper deserves his critics but to write him off is also very premature. I tend to think talent wins out in the end and he'll be fine. It's not an indictment on Cooper that he's switching positions. One guy has established him at a pro bowl level at LG, the other is still getting his career started. Which one would you switch? It just common sense to me.
