I love Dockett. The guy bleeds Cardinal Red and has since he was drafted by the Cardinals. However there is no way the Cards can over pay for his services. Everyone knows the NFL is a business. At 33 years old and coming off a major injury his options are limited.
It would be a huge mistake for the Cardinals to pay him $10M next year. That number needs be at least cut in half for him to stay. If the Cardinals are willing to extend him another year, I wouldn't garentee any of that money.
It's sad when a great athlete nears the end of his career. Especially a loyal player like Dockett. However keeping old players around at inflated cap prices isn't in the best interest of the team.
I'm holding out hope that Dockett is willing to work with the team to remain a Cardinals. However I'm not holding my breath that he will be back.

Personally, I think this is an easy fix for Cards front office with a restructure. This will get done.
C'mon, MCD. You're better than this. Dockett has a cap hold of $9.8M in 2015, yes, but he's only getting paid $6.5M. That's still a little above his value and risk proposition, but it's what may make it easy to fix that problem.
Dockett's pro-rated remaining bonus of $3M is what creates the problem and that gaudy cap number.
You can't restructure him in the same way the Cards did with Fitz last season because Dockett is in the last year of his deal. What you can do, though is extend his contract.
I think the Cards would like to get back some of that scheduled $6.5M because he's coming off the ACL and he's getting older. Let's say that They're willing to agree on $4M in 2015 compensation guaranteed.
You could structure an extension that is 4 years, $20M, with $4M guaranteed. $4M would be guaranteed in signing bonus and first year salary, with a 2016 non-guaranteed salary of $3M, 2017 of $6M, 2018 of $7M (or whatever).
That would change his cap complexion in 2015 from $9.8M to...
Remaining pro-rated 2010 signing bonus: $3M
Pro-rated 2015 signing bonus: $750K ($3M divided by 4 years)
2015 guaranteed salary: $1M
TOTAL 2015 CAP CHARGE: $4.75M
Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I'd be fine with a deal like this.
However would Drew Rosenhaus accept a deal with so little guaranteed money? This proposed contract would essentially be voided in 2017 as the Cardinals will most likely never pay a 36 year old DT $6M a year.
I guess it depends on whether Drew is Dockett's boss or Dockett tells Drew what to do, right?
I think that $4M in 2015 is the max that Dockett is going to be able to get on the open market. No one is going to give him additional guaranteed money or a longer commitment.
And it's essentially a one-year deal with a team option in 2016. The Cards can come back and release Dockett or ask him for another paycut in 2017. They can actually release him after 2015 and only have $2.25M in dead money--which they could spread over 2 seasons as a June 1 cut, anyway.
$4M would be way on the high side for a DT who is 33 and is coming off a major injury. John Abraham only got $3M a year for 2 years and that was after coming off a season where he had 10 sacks. Although Abraham was 34 at the time but at least he was healthy. Dockett doesn't get sacks so I don't believe he will get the big dollars if he enters FA.
With that said, I did listen to the interview on the way home from work last night and you could hear it in Dockett's voice. He honestly believes that he will be back stronger than ever next year. The guy is just so passionate about playing football. So it will be interesting to see if Dockett is willing to sign a contract extension with little security in it.

I read the entire article. He'll be back. That is his way of saying I wont play for nothing but I want to be here and will take a reasonable paycut. If he doesn't say that, he gets lowballed to hell.
Sometimes people shouldn't act so rude with their condescending comments.
your counter comment was just as rude BRR...
for the record, I agree he is going to be back at a reasonable rate of course
I also think that John Abraham was a mercenary and there were things about his character that kept him from making money equivalent to his contribution.
After his comments about Dansby leaving last year combined with these comments, lets see just how much he is a man of his words. Which I think he just might be.
I don't see 9-0 coming back. His stats have fallen off big time.
My guess is he tests the market and see's too big of a drop off
Kim better not overpay for DD.
He's worth about 2.5
Cool. Play for 3m a year.
Agreed. I think on account of the winning, the fanbase overlooked the hardcore F-U Abraham gave the team last year. Dude is a straight douche IMO. Opposite of Dockett.
4 to 5 mil per season is fine with me. Anything less is insulting.
What's insulting is his constant embarassing behavior. He makes more news off the field than on. Don't be surprised when the Cardinals wash their hands of Nine-0.

Yeah I'm getting pretty sick of DD's constant DUI's, pot smoking, sexual assault charges, weapons charges, child abuse and domestic violence charges. It's pretty sickening and to him I say good riddance.![]()
Some ppl care about behavior whether you break the law or not. If that makes you a stiff then so be it. Athletes are held to a different standard. Ppl want D-Wash back citing a SECOND chance when he'll be on a THIRD suspension.![]()
